Nintendo demands that Super Smash Bros. be removed from Evo

The Super Smash Bros. community is enraged at Nintendo. Again.

This time, Evo has announced that Super Smash Bros. will not be making a return appearance to the 2022 tournament. In a tweet from TOs, Evo stated: "We are saddened that Nintendo has chosen not to continue that legacy with us this year. In the future, we hope to once again celebrate the Super Smash Bros. community alongside them."

This disheartening news comes after Nintendo announced a Melee and Ultimate circuit alongside Panda Global. This partnership was met with mixed emotions from the Smash community, many of which felt that Nintendo had no business getting involved with the scene after the community singlehandedly made it what it was for the past 20 years. Others were concerned about what Nintendo getting involved would truly entail.

The Smash community largely agreed that Smash being removed from Evo was Nintendo's doing, although some wondered if it was Evo's choice after being acquired by Sony. But with Nintendo's track record of canceling events and not supporting the competitive scene, it seemed more than likely that Nintendo was behind the decision.

This was another blow to the competitive Smash community, with Nintendo making it clear that they are not willing to support esports initiatives unless it's done the company's way specifically. Still, it's unclear what Nintendo's official circuit will entail. At this point, however, the Smash community is just hoping it involves a lot of prize support and publicity opportunities for pros after the company continuously made the community struggle to financially support themselves.

The passion from the Smash community continued to shine through despite the setback. Pro player Hungrybox announced an idea for an international Smash Major on the same weekend as Evo, which was met with approval from fans. While it's unclear what the competitive Smash scene will truly do at this time, there is one thing that's for certain — they won't be giving up on competitive Smash any time soon.
