Michelangelo banned from $10k Super Smash Con tournament due to infinite combo

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl had its first character banned from tournament play this week when Super Smash Con organizers announced that, alongside indefinite jab locks, Michelangelo is banned from play. Michelangelo is best known for loving pizza in TMNT, but an oppressively powerful infinite combo is his biggest claim to infamy in the 9 days since the game's release.

The combo is a simple enough juggle that relies on the slow downward anglethat  Michelangelo's forward aerial attack sends his opponent. This move is spammable and combo's into a grab, which allows Michelangelo to then loop into more forward aerials after tossing the enemy upward. This is consistently infinite that works against the entire cast -- check out examples below:

Leo "Deusmoon" Argüello an All-Star brawl Developer, posted to Reddit confirming that the infinite was already fixed:

"Just an FYI, Mikey infinite is already fixed, we are doing a lot of fixes to the game, but every fix we do needs to go into QA to make sure everything is working as intended and something else didn’t broke, so as much as we would love to do a bunch of patches, we need to make sure that every patch won’t break the experience for other players. We’re glad about this decision on the tournament tho, hopefully, we’ll see some pretty good and hype matches!!"

While the infinite didn't have time to cause any major upsets, The Juice Box 54, a tournament hosted by pro smash Hungryboxc on his stream, was dominated by Michelangelo players utilizing the infinite constantly.  As Hungrybox describes in a video posted to YouTube about the ban, players who originally "didn't even make a dent" in the prior tournaments were suddenly "wrecked everyone" using the infinite combo.

Examples All-Star Brawls less-then-stable engine and exploitable mechanics continue to emerge as the competitive platform fighter community learn more about the game. This isn't the first infinite combo found and developers have been transparent in their decision to make frequent balance patches and bug fixes.

For now, the game's fast combat and limitless mobility options are keeping the platform fighting game community entertain. However,  If new bugs and game-breaking exploits become the norm, All-Star Brawl's esports momentum can and will be cut short.
