FunPlus Phoenix has defeated Team WE 3-0 to qualify for the finals of the 2021 League of Legends Professional League Summer Playoffs and in doing so has become the first LPL team to qualify for the World Championship this fall.

FunPlus Phoenix's 13-3, 1st place finish in the 2021 LPL Summer Split granted the squad a bye from the first three rounds of the Summer Playoffs, and in its first match, FPX found itself against a surging LNG who had just upset China's spring champion and reigning Mid-Season Invitational champion Royal Never Give Up. FPX extinguished whatever fire had been set under LNG almost immediately in a 3-0 win.

Last night, FPX faced off against a Team WE who had upset EDward Gaming 3-2; the latter team entered the LPL Summer Playoffs as the 2nd seed on the opposite side of the bracket from FPX. FPX, primarily due to the continue extraordinary play of mid laner Kim "Doinb" Tae-sang, slammed WE in the same fashion as LNG and qualified for the finals of the post-season and Worlds 2021 simultaneously in its second consecutive Playoffs sweep.

Because EDG defeated LNG in the most recent lower bracket match, WE will now face off against EDG to see who meets the undefeated FPX in the finals. With seven teams eliminated from the post-season, only three remain.

This will be FPX's second time attending the World Championship after winning the Summoner's Cup on its first attempt in 2019. FPX was the LPL's 1st seed in 2019, and while it got off to a slow start in the Group Stage, it came alive in the best-of-five series format of the Knockout Stage in very similar fashion to how it currently looks in the LPL Summer Playoffs. 4/5 of FPX's roster is the same as its 2019 championship roster with top laner Jang "Nuguri" Ha-gwon being the sole difference.
