Nintendo's 'Pokémon Pokopia' has won the Grand Prize at the Japan Game Awards 2026.

On the 15th, Japan's Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) held the Japan Game Awards 2026 and announced the award winners across various categories, including the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, Breakthrough Award, Special Award, Movement Award, Game Designers' Award, Award for Excellence, and the Grand Prize.
The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award, presented to games, individuals, organizations, or hardware that have significantly contributed to the development of the Japanese game industry, was awarded to the Pokémon IP. The franchise was recognized for its immense IP influence both in Japan and globally.
The Breakthrough Award, presented to titles that pioneer new genres or gameplay concepts, went to Capcom's 'Pragmata.' The game received high praise for elevating hacking—which could easily have been a mere supporting mechanic—into a core pillar of combat, delivering a gameplay experience distinct from conventional shooters.
The Special Award, given to works or individuals that generated significant market buzz or made exceptional contributions to game industry and cultural development, went to 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.' Released on April 1 of this year, 'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' has grossed over $1 billion worldwide (approx. 1.3594 trillion won), ranking second among the highest-grossing video game movies globally, matching the success of its predecessor. Meanwhile, the previous installment, 'The Super Mario Bros. Movie,' continues to hold the number one spot with $1.3 billion in global revenue.
The Movement Award, presented to games that became major talking points or created social phenomena, was awarded to 'MECCHA CHAMELEON.' Surpassing 20 million copies sold within just two months of release, the game established itself as one of the year's biggest hits and top indie games. Unlike traditional hide-and-seek games, it gained massive popularity for its novel mechanic allowing players to paint their own bodies to blend into the background.

The Game Designers' Award, which honors games based on novelty rather than sales figures or market trends, was awarded to Team9's 'Word Game (文字遊戲).' The game was chosen for its originality as a puzzle title set in a world where everything from backgrounds and objects to the protagonist 'I (我)' is composed entirely of characters, requiring players to push, combine, and erase characters to solve puzzles. Established in 2010 by game designer Masahiro Sakurai, famous for the Super Smash Bros. series, this year marks the final edition of the award, making 'Word Game's victory all the more meaningful.
The Awards for Excellence were presented to 'Death Stranding 2', 'Donkey Kong Bananza', 'Magical Girl's Magic Trial', 'Silent Hill f', 'Ghost of Yōtei', 'Digimon Story: Time Stranger', 'Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road', 'Kirby Air Ride', 'PARANORMASIGHT: FILE 38 The Mermaid Story of Ise', 'Resident Evil Requiem', 'Pokémon Pokopia', and 'Pragmata'.
The Grand Prize, serving as the finale of the awards, went to 'Pokémon Pokopia.' A cozy sandbox simulation game based on the Pokémon IP, it surpassed 5 million cumulative sales and drove hardware demand to the point of causing stock shortages for its platform, the Nintendo Switch 2.
