A hands-on demo for Capcom's 'Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen'—what can be called the definitive edition of Dragon's Dogma 2—took place on site at Gamescom 2026. Going beyond traditional media attendees, it was an opportunity for even more people to see the game in action.
Considering how Dragon's Dogma 2 was met with mixed reactions alongside positive acclaim upon its initial launch, continuous improvements and user feedback integration since then served as a stepping stone to shift public sentiment toward the positive. Alongside these enhancements, Dark Arisen adds new content and story elements, moving toward expanding an already complete game.
Here is what it was like to play Dragon's Dogma 2 firsthand as it finally revealed itself to everyone.

The game begins in Norgan, a new region added through Dark Arisen. Starting with a quest titled "Commotion in Norgan," as shown in previously released videos, Norgan is a snowy region covered in ice and snow. At relatively lower elevations, you find short, sparse vegetation, but as you climb higher up into the area, you are treated to a white, snowy landscape.
However, this snowy scenery is not purely beautiful. At times, the vast white expanse makes it difficult to clearly see your surroundings, and blizzards summoned by large enemies like yetis can block your line of sight completely. Furthermore, this yeti-like enemy serves as a mid-stage boss in the demo, presenting a menacing threat.
Advancing after fighting off humanoid enemies and wolves in the early phase, you encounter the yeti-like monster halfway up the snow-capped mountain, boasting a massive size. Swinging an uprooted tree trunk around in its attacks, getting caught in its strike will send you flying far away as if hit by a home run hitter's bat. In particular, it spews blizzards around itself for a fairly long duration; getting close inflicts continuous damage, and staying too long will freeze you solid.

In a standard action RPG, you would have no choice but to take a follow-up attack here, but Dragon's Dogma 2 has Pawns, right? Whenever the main character gets frozen, a Pawn dives in like an action movie hero pushing someone out of the way of an oncoming car, saving the protagonist. Thanks to this, taking follow-up hits while frozen was rare.
As you fight the yeti monster alongside your Pawns—utilizing fire enchants, health and stamina restoration, and attack support—you eventually reach the phase where it falls over. At this moment, delivering a finishing blow with heavy attacks inflicts massive damage, whittling down the enemy's stacked health bars line by line.
In fact, rather than dodging around the blizzard attacks, there is a strategy of climbing onto the monster's back using the grab mechanic to attack safely from behind. However, stamina depletes extremely quickly during this, and because the monster moves constantly, opportunities to deal sufficient damage were limited. Since this expansion feels tailored for endgame content, the character level was set to Level 50, and skill attacks dealt high damage. It was often more advantageous to pour on heavy skill attacks rather than consuming stamina to climb and stab.
Granted, Pawns kept climbing onto the monster's legs and calling out to pull you up, briefly misleading me into thinking that route might deal damage faster. In any case, wasting recovery items on stamina-draining attacks here puts you in danger for the next stage—because the battle against the Fallen Dragon still awaits.

Encountered at the peak of the snowy mountain, this dragon is an undead dragon that vomits ghouls following its command from its mouth. Its exposed heart, clearly visible from the outside, was shielded by a hard sternum, preventing attacks from dealing damage. The head and front legs were the main targetable areas, but the head shook relentlessly while breathing fire, making direct hits tough. The legs were also constantly shifting and slamming into the ground, making them equally difficult to hit cleanly.
On top of that, the vomited ghouls were quite an obstacle during combat. While the ghouls themselves were not particularly powerful, their sheer numbers amidst the dragon's relentless attacks meant they often charged at squishy support Pawns, interrupting their skill casting.

Even when successfully targeting the dragon's weak points—blowing off its head or severing an arm—it refuses to fall and continues its assault. As its descriptor "Fallen Dragon" suggests, the boss feels designed to evoke a sense of hopelessness rather than sheer terror, creating a feeling that it can never truly be defeated. Ultimately, it regenerates its severed limb entirely and prepares a devastating attack.
At that moment, Eir, a character featured in the game's reveal trailer, steps up to face the dragon alone while leaving the fallen protagonist behind. The protagonist loses consciousness while watching this scene unfold, bringing the demo to an end.
From the snowy region of Norgan to the monstrous dragon bearing a face almost human-like, to the mysterious character Eir—every figure, enemy, and setting featured in the key visual of Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen made an appearance in this demo. The content of the reveal trailer also covered up to the end of this demo portion.

In a way, one could say Capcom is hiding the story beyond this demo portion for now, or looking at it another way, teasing the expansion's narrative that will unfold in earnest. It was a demo that left players with more questions than answers, making anyone who enjoyed the main game eager to play Dark Arisen as soon as possible.
This media demo took place on what appeared to be a stationary PC setup. However, what builds even more anticipation is the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 release. Although Elden Ring is set to launch soon, action RPGs offering an "epic" scale and experience on the Nintendo Switch 2 remain rare. Continuing that experience alongside a brand-new expansion on a portable console certainly holds strong appeal.
The time was far too brief to thoroughly inspect the game's overall volume or the fine details of modified features—especially considering the scope of a game like Dragon's Dogma 2. That only makes the official release all the more anticipated. Dragon's Dogma 2: Dark Arisen releases on October 9 for PC, PS5, XSX, and Nintendo Switch.
