On the 28th, a post appeared on the official Resident Evil (formerly known as Biohazard) X (formerly Twitter) account, featuring an image of Sherry Birkin and claiming that someone was attempting a hack. The source of the hack was identified as 'the Moon.' Shortly after, the account's name and profile picture were changed. The hack was the work of D-I-0336-7, a cutting-edge, high-performance Pragmata named Diana, created in the Cradle.
Diana shared an AI-generated image of herself and a header image showing her hacking the Raccoon City logo. She changed the X account name to 'Diana @ Raccoon City' and posted a cheeky message, claiming she had hacked a Raccoon City sign and ended up there. She added that she had never heard of Resident Evil, but that she would gather data, finding courage in Hugh's support despite her fear.
As the tone of the posts suggests, this social media hack is essentially a collaboration between Capcom's popular franchise, Resident Evil, and Pragmata, which was released on the 17th. The background for this marketing move lies in Pragmata's successful launch. Despite being a completely new IP, the game saw rapid early sales, reaching 1 million units sold in just two days. The game has also received critical acclaim, currently holding an 85 critic score and a 9.0 user score on Metacritic.
Meanwhile, Diana has been leaving various posts on the Resident Evil account. She mentioned the Umbrella Corporation, noting that resting under a parasol is comfortable, and remarked that the zombies remind her of 'Walkers.' She also expressed a desire to meet and play with Emily from Resident Evil Requiem, followed by the release of messages from Emma Rose Cleaner, the voice actor for Emily, and Angela Santalbano, the voice actor for Grace, the protagonist of Resident Evil Requiem. This indicates that Capcom had been preparing this event well in advance.
Capcom's Resident Evil account hack goes beyond a simple viral event; it is interpreted as part of an IP strategy that leverages the company's popular series by putting Diana—one of the game's most praised elements—at the forefront. By exposing Pragmata to the Resident Evil fanbase, which is among Capcom's most dedicated, the company is naturally integrating information about the new game into an existing community. Notably, Capcom left hints in the header image, leaving open the possibility of Diana appearing in other IPs in the future.
