Jeff Kaplan congratulates Seagull in-game for reaching 100k concurrent viewers during D.va stream promotion.

▲ It's hard to find something Overwatch fans love more than free in-game cosmetics.

UPDATE:

When the stream finally went offline and the promotion was over, Seagull shared the number of new followers and subscribers he gained during the day:

An absolutely monstrous amount for any Twitch streamer to make in just one day. To put it in perspective, the infamous return of streamer DrDisRespect gained him 12,000 subscribers in one day and his stream peaked at 390k concurrent viewers.

Earlier in the month, Brandon "Seagull" Larned announced his retirement from the Overwatch League. The decision was predominantly fueled by a desire to return to full-time streaming and Seagull's loyalty to his Twitch.tv audience. In his own words, he felt like he had abandoned them.

It was a turbulent period for Seagull fans, but today marks a more positive and declarative victory for Overwatch's most iconic streamer. Partnering with Blizzard during the "Nano Cola Challenge" initiative, Overwatch fans flocked to Seagull's stream in enormous numbers.

At one high point, Seagull broke 100k concurrent viewers:

Two things are obvious from this achievement. One, Overwatch fans really love free skins and cosmetics. The second is that Seagull is still very much the king of Overwatch streaming and his time at the OWL didn't diminish that in the slightest. As the first featured broadcaster to kick-off the event, it is doubtful that any other Overwatch streamer will match the 100k milestone Seagull and his fans achieved today.

Could Mirage, Fran, or Anak have achieved similar numbers if they were the first streamer highlighted through this promotion? Probably not, but it is important to note that the 100k mark was very likely inflated with viewers less interested in watching Seagull play and more much interested in getting free stuff. Expect more high numbers from Overwatch streamers as this promotion continues.

An unexpected visitor

The moment Seagull realized he had broke 100k was made even cooler thanks to Overwatch Game Director and Vice President of Blizzard, Jeff Kaplan, personally congratulating the moment on his Overwatch account, Tigole. To those unaware, Tigole was the moniker Jeff Kaplan went by during his Everquest glory days as a raid leader and extremely outspoken critic of the games encounter design and overall production decisions.

It was during this time that he was approached by Blizzard to join the company (after first joining the companies Everquest guild) and the rest is history. Tigole is most certainly the real Jeff Kaplan and also most certainly referencing the joke you think it is.
