[Guide] What is Support in Legends of Runeterra?

There are many cards in Legends of Runeterra, and each have their own stats and effects to make them unique. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the card game genre, to learn all these effects. That’s why we’re dissecting all the keywords in a series of guides. In this one we’re taking a look at Support.

Though most of the time units have to fight for themselves in Legends of Runeterra, the Support mechanic breaks that rule. Units that have Support grant a buff to an ally, but there is a specific rule: the buff is only granted when you’re attacking with the unit with the Support effect. The unit directly to the right of the card with the Support effect, will be the one to receive the buff.

Support can be strong, but there’s a relatively simple strategy to counter it. Most units that grant a Support effect to an ally don’t have the best stat lines. Since they’re forced to battle in order to trigger their effect, they can be taken out with relative ease. Below are a few of the cards with the Support keyword.

Herald of Spring is the cheapest unit bearing the Support keyword, but the potential is quite big. Since it doesn’t cost much, Herald of Spring is easily squeezed in the same turn as a big unit with a lot of attack power. This allows for a big burst of heal your opponent might not have anticipated.

Over in Demacia, the stats on War Chefs are a little bit better for its two mana cost. Three health trades more favorably into units of the same cost, overall. The effect of the card isn’t as potent though. While a +1/+1 buff is nice and can definitely help your units survive or deal more critical damage, it’s usually wiser to include more impactful cards directly into your deck.

The most aggressive Support card is Kato the Arm, hailing from the Noxus region. It’s very expensive for its stat line—you have to be in a pretty bad shape to play a unit with five attack and three health, and pay five mana, if it has no upside. Thankfully Kato the Arm’s upside is pretty big. A three attack boost to the unit it’s attacking with, plus Overwhelm granted to that same ally, is a very strong boost when your goal is to rush down the enemy Nexus as quickly as possible.
