[Guide] What is Regeneration in Legends of Runeterra?

There are many cards in Legends of Runeterra, and each have their own stats and effects to make them unique. It can be overwhelming, especially if you’re new to the card game genre, to learn all these effects. That’s why we’re dissecting all the keywords in a series of guides. In this one we’re taking a look at Regeneration.

A few cards in Legends of Runeterra have the ability to heal an ally—Kindly Tavernkeeper and Ritual of Renewal are two examples. But units with Regeneration don’t need any of that. When the round is over, and you and your opponent switch attack/defend roles, units with Regeneration heal back to full health. This includes any buff they might have gotten; if a unit’s base health is five health, but gained two extra health by some sort of buff, the unit is healed back up to seven at the start of the next round.

Dealing with a unit that has Regeneration can be annoying. When the opponent plays it smart, the unit can stick around for many turns. Using cards with Challenger to drag Regeneration units into combat is a great way, and direct spells can finish them off even when they’re hiding. Below are a couple of examples of cards with the Regeneration keyword.

The only follower bearing the Regeneration keyword is Scarmaiden Reaver, a five cost unit from the Freljord. Her stat line isn’t stellar—for five mana, a unit with four attack power and five health is subpar. Scarmaiden Reaver’s use is mostly to repeatedly chip away at the enemy Nexus, using her Overwhelm keyword in combination with Regeneration. It allows to tank medium amounts of damage, while taking care of mid-sized enemies at the same time.

Garen is one of the three champions in Legends of Runeterra with Regeneration, the others being Vladimir (at level two), and Braum. Garen’s stat line is a bit better than that of Scarmaiden Reaver, though the Overwhelm keyword isn’t present. Of course, Garen has the benefit of being able to level up, gaining +1/+1 in stats as well as the “ready your attack” ability.
