The 'Elden Ring' live-action film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on March 3, 2028. The film will be written and directed by Alex Garland, known for 'Ex Machina' and 'Annihilation.' The production team plans to shoot entirely with IMAX-certified cameras to bring the game's grand world and overwhelming visual effects to the big screen. Full-scale production is set to begin in the spring of 2026.
The full cast includes Kit Connor ('Heartstopper'), Ben Whishaw, Cailee Spaeny, Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, and Nick Offerman. The inclusion of John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, and Peter Serafinowicz has also generated significant excitement.
'Elden Ring,' a collaboration between FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki and 'Game of Thrones' author George R.R. Martin, has been a global hit, surpassing 30 million copies sold worldwide since its 2022 release. It has received critical acclaim from both reviewers and players for its high difficulty, deep narrative, and expansive open-world design.
Anticipation for the film adaptation is already heating up online. On the 5th, a set structure resembling the 'Church of Marika' from the game was leaked via the North American community Reddit. The structure, which features a form similar to the statue of 'Queen Marika the Eternal' from the original work, has become a major topic of discussion among fans.
Adapting game IPs into film and television is a global trend. With the success of 'A Minecraft Movie' proving the potential of game-based films, various projects are currently in development, including a 'God of War' TV series and live-action films for 'The Legend of Zelda' and 'Helldivers.' 'Elden Ring,' co-produced by A24 and DNA Films, is also highly anticipated as a major game-to-film adaptation.
