The 'MouthPad,' a wearable device that allows users to control PCs and mobile devices using only tongue and head movements, has officially launched in the United States.

On July 22 (local time), Augmental announced the U.S. launch of its Bluetooth mouse, 'MouthPad.' At the same time, the company also unveiled the beta version of its new voice-input wearable, 'VOX.'

The 'MouthPad' is a thin, custom-fitted device that resembles a dental retainer. It features a pressure-sensitive trackpad built into the roof of the mouth, which, when combined with motion sensors that track head movement, allows users to perform various tasks—such as moving the cursor, clicking, and swiping—hands-free. All functions can be configured through a dedicated app.

Since its initial reveal through an early access program in 2024, the device has been used by over 100 people with limited mobility, including students, artists, and gamers, some of whom wear it for up to 16 hours a day. The second-generation model, released earlier this year, added custom keyboard shortcuts triggered by tongue gestures and supports remapping the trackpad to WASD keys for gaming or 3D modeling. Battery life has been extended to over 7 hours, and the device can now pair with multiple units, allowing users to switch between them with the press of a button.

Tomás Baptista, a MouthPad user and screener analyst, recently achieved a speed of 10.47 bits per second in a task similar to 'Webgrid,' a cursor-control test that measures both accuracy and speed. Augmental stated that this performance is on par with the latest brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that require invasive brain surgery.

This marks the first time the MouthPad is being sold to the general public. The current waitlist includes over 6300 people from diverse professions—such as surgeons, engineers, pianists, boxers, mechanics, and parents—who have difficulty using their hands freely.

The newly unveiled VOX is a skin-worn pendant microphone inspired by stethoscopes, designed to detect sound transmitted through the body as well as through the air. The company explains that it filters out background noise and other people's conversations more effectively than conventional microphones, enabling stable voice input even in quiet environments, from whispers in a library to low-volume speech in a noisy cafe. VOX can be activated by pressing a button on the device or via tongue gestures when paired with a MouthPad, and it is designed to operate only when triggered by the user.

The MouthPad is priced at $1,400, excluding the separate cost for a dental scan (approximately $100). Delivery can take up to six months after ordering. The VOX Beta is priced at $200 and is scheduled for release in the second half of this year. Augmental stated that it plans to donate all proceeds from the VOX Beta to support those in need of a MouthPad.

Meanwhile, the company noted that neither the MouthPad nor VOX are medical devices and are not intended for the diagnosis or treatment of any specific disease or condition.
