Annapurna Interactive hosted a showcase for its new title, 'SILENT HILL: Townfall,' at a booth during Summer Game Fest Play Days.
'SILENT HILL: Townfall' maintains the series' core identity of psychological horror while offering a standalone story accessible to both newcomers and long-time fans. Set in the streets of Scotland, the game explores themes of self-reflection, loss, and causality alongside its horror elements.

The primary setting is the island of St. Amelia in 1996. The protagonist, Simon O'Dell, returns to the fog-shrouded town after being asked to set things right. As he ventures deep into the seemingly abandoned town, Simon must navigate his relationships with the location and its inhabitants, gradually uncovering fragments of the past. The game is characterized by its depiction of the town's history and the subtle blurring of reality and hallucination.
Notably, this is the first mainline entry in the series to adopt a first-person perspective. Players explore the town through Simon's eyes. The limited field of view inherent to the first-person perspective heightens the tension when approaching danger, with a focus on delivering an immersive horror experience through stealth, combat, and exploration.

The radio, a staple gimmick of the original series, has been replaced by a portable television called the 'CRTV.' Players receive unstable analog signals to view hidden threats, narrative fragments, and clues to puzzles on the screen. The game weaves its story by combining these fragmented elements with narrative-driven puzzles to reconstruct past events.
In terms of combat, the game features strategic stealth and engagement systems. Players can wield melee weapons, block attacks, or use firearms from a distance. Beyond simple combat or flight, players can also use the environment and tools to distract enemies, track enemy positions while remaining hidden, and navigate through dangerous areas.

The audio design is crafted to enhance the terrifying atmosphere, creating a soundscape filled with environmental creaks, signals, and cries. The dynamic soundtrack, composed by Pilotpriest, reacts to the actions of both the player and enemies, shifting to build tension or provide relief in sync with the flow of action and stealth.
The game also features a multiple-ending system where the outcome changes based on the player's actions. Choices made throughout the game lead to different conclusions, designed to leave a lasting impression even after the story ends.
'SILENT HILL: Townfall,' an episodic new entry in the SILENT HILL series co-produced by Annapurna Interactive, No Code, and KONAMI, is scheduled for official release on September 24 via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and PS5.
