Akatsuki Games, TOHO and Production I.G on Wednesday announced that Kaiju No. 8 THE GAME, based on Naoya Matsumoto’s hit manga series, will launch on mobile and PC platforms Aug. 31 (JST). The free-to-play title, available via the App Store, Google Play and Steam, follows massive global pre-registration interest that began April 25 and has already surpassed 850,000 sign-ups.
Developed in collaboration with the original publishers, Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ and the anime producers behind Kaiju No. 8, the game immerses players in high-end 3D battles against monstrous invaders. Players will take command of Japan Defense Force units alongside newly introduced characters in the special operations squad CLOZER, led by Sagan Shinomiya.
New Trailer and Game Features
A new trailer released alongside the announcement showcases dynamic combat footage and key visuals featuring Kaiju No. 8 at the forefront of intense firefights. Voice actor Masaya Fukunishi, who portrays protagonist Kafka Hibino in the anime, demonstrated smooth, responsive controls and cinematic “core exposure” ultimates during the Kaiju No. 8 Day Special Program on Aug. 5 (JST). The broadcast also unveiled original in-game kaiju designs and story-mode cutscenes.
Among the original characters, strategist Chester Lochburn—an ex-U.K. defense officer—offers versatile weapon-selection tactics, while weapons specialist Suited designs innovative armaments fueled by kaiju research. The collaboration promises an expanded narrative that builds on the series’ lore and manga sales exceeding 18 million copies in Japan.
Pre-registration rewards include two four-star characters, Mina Ashiro and Soshiro Hoshina, unlocked immediately at launch. Once total sign-ups reach one million, players will be able to choose a five-star character of their choice. The game supports Japanese, English, Traditional and Simplified Chinese, Korean and French.
Kaiju No. 8 THE GAME joins a growing list of media expansions following the anime’s Season 1 theatrical compilation debut in March and the ongoing Season 2 broadcast every Saturday night on TV Tokyo and streaming worldwide.
