According to a report by ESPN Esports’ Tyler "FionnOnFire" Erzberger, former Griffin Mid Laner Jeong "Chovy" Ji-hoon and his teammate, subsitute Top Laner Choi "Doran" Hyeon-joon, are expected to join DragonX (formerly KingZone DragonX) for the LCK 2020 season.
The report, co-authored by Erzberger’s colleague Jacob Wolf, states the LCS organization Evil Geniuses was hoping to acquire Chovy as it’s starting Mid Laner for the 2020 LCS season, and is now set to acquire Daniele “Jiizuke” di Mauro in his place.
Chovy and Doran’s departure from Griffin comes after a temporarily-paused investigation of the team’s parent company, STILL8, after reports of misconduct by Head Coach Kim "cvMax" Dae-ho came to light.
DragonX released the entirety of its roster this off-season, only keeping Bot LanerKim "Deft" Hyuk-kyu in its rebrand&rebuild process.
Evil Geniuses entered the LCS by acquiring the franchise slot formerly occupied by Echo Fox, and quickly got to work by assembling a roster core by acquiring Jungler Dennis “Svenskeren” Johnsen, Support Tristan “Zeyzal” Stidham, and Top Laner Colin “Kumo” Zhao for its starting roster from Cloud9. After purchasing Bae “Bang” Jun-sik’s contract from 100 Thieves, EG only needed to sign a Mid Laner to complete its starting 5.
Reportedly, all eyes were set on Chovy, but Jiizuke looks to be EG’s Mid Laner in the upcoming split. Jiizuke enjoyed a breakout rookie campaign in the 2017 EU LCS with Team Vitality, but followed up a sophomore slump with a disappointing struggle of a third professional season. A change of scenery might be just what the Italian Stallion needs to get back on top.
UPDATE Dec. 4:
On the 4th (KST), DragonX announced through their official Youtube that Chovy will be their newest starting mid laner for their League of Legends team. With this addition to their roster, two former Griffin players have now reunited with their former Head Coach, Kim "cvMax" Dae-ho.
