Activision and Infinity Ward have released a DMZ lore trailer ahead of the launch of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.
On October 5, a 2-minute and 27-second trailer titled "DMZ Worldbuilder" was released on the official Call of Duty YouTube channel. Narrated by key characters Ghost and Laswell, the trailer introduces the DMZ region that players must infiltrate and survive.
In particular, references in the trailer to "hostiles pursuing their own interests alongside North Korean forces," "deniable off-the-record operations," and the "need for resource self-sufficiency" confirm that DMZ is an extraction shooter featuring PvPvE gameplay.
Meanwhile, the DMZ mode showcased in the trailer is a Call of Duty-based extraction shooter first introduced by Infinity Ward in Modern Warfare II (2022). Released at the time to capture the extraction shooter market, it failed to shine due to low replay value and unaddressed teaming issues.
For Modern Warfare 4's DMZ, the development team previously noted in an interview that they took lessons from the previous installment's failures, raising player expectations over whether it can deliver a refreshed experience.
