Kakao Games has released a developer documentary for its new PC MMORPG ArcheAge S: Strait of Freedom (ArcheAge S), revealing actual in-game footage for the first time. The approximately 17-minute video introduced the design direction for combat, progression, life activities, competitive content, and naval features, as well as the music production process.
Kakao Games announced on the 29th that it has released the ArcheAge S developer documentary video. The video features key developers, including Executive Producer Kim Kyung-tae who oversees the project, alongside composer Yoon Sang, who serves as the OST music director.
The development team explained the MMORPG structure they aim to implement in the new title, building upon players' experiences with the original ArcheAge. Executive Producer Kim Kyung-tae shared that based on their experience developing and operating the original game, they are constructing a structure where progression, combat, and life content are interconnected. The core vision is to create a flow where choices made by players during progression lead into combat and competition, eventually expanding into large-scale conflict and naval battles. Rather than isolating individual features, the design ensures that a player's progression and activities influence other content.
In combat, players can combine various skills provided depending on their equipped weapons and armor. This system allows players to craft their own combat styles through gear and skill customization. Progression options are also expanded beyond field hunting and dungeons to include life activities such as gathering, production, and trading. The control scheme features intuitive gameplay and an isometric perspective, designed to heighten the fun of assessing combat situations and responding strategically.
For life content, the developers presented an approach that reduces the burden of land claiming by providing personal housing spaces. Resources obtained from production and trade directly feed into character progression and competitive content, allowing life activities to impact the overall growth structure. Competitive content varies in scale, ranging from small party and guild-level battles to large-scale cross-server PvP. In particular, server match-ups will rotate periodically to prevent a single faction from maintaining long-term dominance.
The music production process was also revealed in the video. Composer Yoon Sang, returning as OST music director for ArcheAge S following the original game, discussed expressing contrasting atmospheres through music—such as the freedom and romance of sailing, the tension of the open sea, and the intensity of naval combat. Alongside the video release, Kakao Games is conducting a player Q&A session. After collecting questions regarding the development direction and key content showcased in the documentary, detailed information will be revealed in a follow-up Q&A.
ArcheAge S is a PC MMORPG led by Executive Producer Kim Kyung-tae, who served as the first planning team lead and later producer for the original ArcheAge. While inheriting the core identity of the original game, its systems and content are being restructured for modern gaming environments. Kakao Games targets a global release for ArcheAge S in the second quarter of 2027, with international service planned primarily through Steam.
