Unity has announced engine support for Meta's next-generation VR device, Meta VR Glasses (hereinafter VR Glasses), starting from the day of its reveal. Developers can build and test content ahead of the official launch scheduled for spring 2027.
Meta VR Glasses were unveiled on September 23 local time at Meta Connect 2026. Existing Meta Quest apps will also run on VR Glasses, allowing studios to expand their OpenXR-based titles using their current workflows.
During development, creators can leverage Unity's expanded eye and hand tracking support, rendering modes that lower GPU costs without compromising visual quality, and enhanced spatial audio support. Even without a physical device, developers can test and preview VR Glasses interactions directly within the Unity Editor.
Studios developing titles such as Cardmada, Dragon Grove, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Dual Destinies VR, Dice Throne Digital, Story of Seasons, Supernatural, and Two Point Hospital – Mixed Reality Edition are also using Unity to create content for VR Glasses.
Alex Blum, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Unity, said, "Unity powers most of the top-selling games on Meta VR, and we hope this momentum continues with VR Glasses." He added, "Whether studios are adding hand-tracking support to existing Meta Quest titles or developing new content for VR Glasses, utilizing a single codebase across multiple devices allows developers to bring content to more platforms and users without hassle."
James Senior, CEO of Supernatural, said, "Thanks to Unity, the relaunch of Supernatural became possible, allowing us to start development from a new repository and implement an end-to-end playable Supernatural workout experience in less than two months." He added, "By restoring six Unity projects, we eliminated legacy platform dependencies and streamlined the client for a new backend. We are now leveraging Unity engine tools even more aggressively to build the best version of Supernatural yet for VR Glasses."
Developers can begin development by downloading or upgrading to Unity 6.6 or higher or the Meta XR All-in-One SDK v207. Unity's CLI workflows and AI tools included in the Meta SDK can also be utilized together.
