South Korea's Pokémon UNITE national team failed to overcome tournament favorite Japan, concluding their tournament run with a bronze medal.
South Korea lost 0-2 in set score to Japan in the first semi-final match of Pokémon UNITE at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on September 27. In the first set, they were outplayed by Japan's precise tactical macro, while in the second set, they failed to maintain an early lead and allowed a comeback.
Japan's strengths were clearly on display right from set 1. Japan anticipated and countered South Korea's ambush plays while showing exceptional teamwork in fights around major objectives. South Korea had an opportunity to turn the tide late in the set, but Japan maintained their pace until the end to close out the set 134-577.
Set 2 was even more disappointing. South Korea established momentum early on and held the lead against Japan. However, they lost control during a late fight over a key objective, and Japan capitalized on the opening to flip the game and secure a 2-0 victory.
After the match, the team captain said, "We prepared so hard, which makes this loss all the more disappointing. There were areas where I fell short. If I get the chance to compete on a stage like this again, I will prepare even more thoroughly and deliver a better performance."
The captain pointed to his own positioning as the primary reason for the defeat in set 2. "My teammates all played so well that we had the momentum to win, but I feel my poor positioning led to our defeat, which I deeply regret," he reflected.
He also acknowledged Japan's performance. Based on recent scrims and qualifiers where South Korea often held the lead until two minutes before the match ended, the team believed they were fully capable of winning. However, the captain explained, "Japan was stronger than expected, and their mental fortitude was definitely clear. The tactical moves they showed until the end were impressive as well. I could see why they are regarded as a top team."
Having entered the competition with the goal of winning gold, feelings about the bronze medal were mixed. "Because we came here to win gold, it is very disappointing, but I am still happy that we secured a medal," the captain said. "If we have the chance to meet them again at another tournament, I want to get our revenge."
Toward the end of the interview, he expressed gratitude to those who helped along the journey. He thanked his teammates who trained together for over two years, the sponsors who supported their boot camp, as well as their physical therapist, sports counselor, and manager.
"I am so grateful to everyone, and I am sorry that I couldn't bring them a gold medal," the captain said before becoming overwhelmed with emotion and breaking into tears. After taking a moment to gather himself, he concluded the interview, saying, "If there are big stages in the future, I want to participate again. I will work hard to show better results and a better performance."
