Bungie, which recently apologized to players while addressing the studio's current status, revealed its future plans for Marathon today (September 25) as part of those efforts.
On September 22, Bungie released an official video featuring new Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon General Manager Josh Dean, stating that they would put "players" first and focus on improving game quality. In particular, they noted that Marathon would undergo changes so that it does not become an exclusive club for veterans, but rather a game everyone can enjoy regardless of playstyle or skill level.

In line with this, the Marathon development team outlined a long-term update roadmap starting in October on their Steam page today. Regarding the update direction, while preserving the winner-takes-all PvPvE foundation, Bungie plans to lower entry barriers so that new and returning players can easily adapt. The team explained that they are re-examining the Shell and Cradle systems from the ground up to enhance the fun of players proactively crafting builds tailored to different situations. Additionally, they plan to strengthen ties to the original trilogy, enhancing the thrill of delving deeper into Tau Ceti IV.
Furthermore, the Nightfall Reset will take place in October. Game Director Del Chafe III explained that the decision for the Nightfall Reset was made so that "all players can start again from the same starting line and fully experience Marathon's intended progression alongside all the improvements made so far," adding that it also serves to re-evaluate progression structure, sense of accomplishment, and fatigue systems.
Alongside this, the "Sponsored Queue"—an extraction mode dedicated to Sponsor Kits—will run on the same schedule as the Cryo Vault. Sponsored Perimeter will open in Week 1, Sponsored Mire in Week 2, and Sponsored Night Mire in Week 3, with this three-week rotation repeating until December's Symbiosis update. Regarding PvE modes, Vault Breaker will return from Week 3 to Week 5, and starting from Week 6, "Sponsored Survival" mode will rotate weekly in the order of Perimeter, Day Mire, Night Mire, and Outpost. Furthermore, the Cryo Vault will open weekly starting Thursday, October 15, with its open duration extending by 24 hours each week.

Meanwhile, Ranked play will not be available during the Nightfall Reset period. Game Director Chafe stated, "Rather than opening Ranked mode in its current state, we decided to use this period to focus on polishing it toward our intended vision," adding that the timing for reopening Ranked play will be announced at a later date.
Details were also shared regarding December's "Symbiosis" update. First, permanent PvE-exclusive content will be added, allowing players to tackle new challenges in the world of Tau Ceti IV. Additionally, a Team Deathmatch mode will be introduced experimentally for casual engagements with other players to build up skill. Furthermore, the Perimeter zone will be expanded significantly and revamped to include high-risk, high-reward areas. Most notably, top-tier boss encounters featuring the Tick Queen—the largest enemy creature to appear so far—were teased. Alongside these, a new Shell type, "Bishop," specializing in ambushes and explosive melee attacks, will be added, along with a revamped onboarding experience for new players and a social space featuring a firing range.

Then in March, the previously introduced update elements will lock together to bring major changes to Marathon. Major updates were teased, including a system that offers permanent, organically connected PvE, PvP, and PvPvE modes, a new onboarding process for new and returning players, enhanced Cradle and Shell progression systems, and more tightly woven questlines and narrative.
Alongside the announcement, Bungie released a behind-the-scenes video titled "The Future of Marathon Part 1," showing developers discussing and working on future updates. It captures key developers, including Game Director Del Chafe III and Creative Director Julia Nardin, refining and applying the update features announced in the post through meetings and playtesting.
Further details regarding Marathon's October and Symbiosis updates will be released at a later date via the Steam page and YouTube.
