Red Ginkgo Games has opened the Steam page for 'Project: Azalea', a real-time strategy (RTS) game set during the Imjin War. Three factions—Joseon, Ming, and Japan—gather food and timber to raise armies, taking the battlefield to the sea and sky.
The three factions in 'Project: Azalea' face off with distinct units and tactics. The company described the battlefield as capturing the mountains and rivers of Joseon rendered in an ink-wash painting style.
There are two types of resources: food and timber. Food is obtained from 'rice' and 'potatoes', while timber is gathered from 'oak' and 'bamboo'. Players construct buildings around their main base and set up barracks and research facilities to produce units, making early construction choices crucial to dictating the flow of the game.
Units are divided into four categories: infantry, armored, aerial, and naval, with each faction featuring unique hero units. Combat outcomes vary even with identical forces, influenced by unit counters, elevation terrain, and weather. Unit performance can be upgraded through research, and certain units utilize active skills.
Matches support up to 8 players per game. Free-for-all and team matches can be customized freely, with AI filling any empty slots. The company stated an average play time of 10 to 30 minutes per match. According to the developer, because multiple forces are entangled on a single battlefield, deciding whom to attack first and when to form alliances creates a different tactical landscape in every game.
Single-player content consists of a total of 30 stages, with 10 for each faction. The mode is designed to teach players step-by-step, from basic controls to faction-specific tactics. It also supports battles against pattern-based AI, allowing players to practice against AI or bring them in as teammates.
Red Ginkgo Games is a studio specializing in historical games, founded by Director Kim Tae-gon, who created 'War Diary', 'Imjinlok', and 'The Great Merchant'. The studio previously released the MMORPG 'Imjin War: Joseon's Counterattack' through Joycity.
