Kingdom Hearts' Sora will explore the Mexican afterlife in late 2027. An animated adaptation of the Kingdom Hearts series was also announced.
At the D23 offline event held on August 14 (local time), Disney unveiled a new trailer for 'Kingdom Hearts IV,' currently in development by SQUARE ENIX. The video revealed a new world based on the Pixar film 'Coco' and announced for the first time that the game is slated for release in late 2027.
The trailer opens with Miguel, the protagonist of Coco, listening to Héctor explain the concept of 'Final Death'—the idea that the deceased vanish from the afterlife once they are completely forgotten by the living. The scene then shifts to Miguel performing in a plaza when Heartless appear, followed by Sora, dressed in an outfit similar to Miguel's, arriving to defeat them.
Sora, Miguel, and Héctor then set off on a journey together, with Sora obtaining a new Keyblade designed to fit the world of Coco. The trailer features combat scenes with Héctor, as well as appearances by core Disney characters including Mickey, Donald, and Goofy. The game is slated for a late 2027 release and will be available on major platforms, including the Nintendo Switch 2, PS5, XSX|S, Steam, and the Epic Games Store.
An animated adaptation of Kingdom Hearts was also announced. Titled 'Kingdom Hearts The Series,' the project will reportedly involve Kingdom Hearts series director Tetsuya Nomura, who will participate in a partnership with the SQUARE ENIX creative team. While a detailed schedule has not been released, the series will be available on Disney platforms, including Disney Channel and the OTT service Disney Plus.
Meanwhile, Disney announced that it is producing a sequel to Coco, titled Coco 2, which is confirmed to be part of the Kingdom Hearts 4 universe. Information on other new Disney and Pixar titles, such as Frozen 3, Zootopia 3, and The Incredibles 3, was also shared. Additionally, a new trailer for Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday and a teaser for Vision Quest were revealed.
