Since its release last February, 'Civilization VII' has struggled to match the reception of its predecessors, but it is now poised for a comeback with a major update titled 'Test of Time.' Firaxis announced via a Steam store post on May 7 that the 'Test of Time' update is scheduled to go live on May 19.
The most significant change in 'Test of Time' is the removal of the forced civilization-switching mechanic. Unlike the traditional structure of the series, Civilization VII previously required players to select a new civilization as eras progressed. Under the new 'Test of Time' concept, where ancient civilizations endure the passage of time to reach the end of the game, this restriction has been lifted.
This change introduces new mechanics. When playing as a civilization that transcends time, players can now adopt unique units or infrastructure from other civilizations corresponding to each era to create a completely unique civilization, or they can choose to stick exclusively to their original civilization's unique elements.
Additionally, a new 'Victory System' and a 'Great Success' system are being added. The update completely overhauls the victory framework, opening up more diverse paths to win. The 'Great Success' system, which replaces the Legacy Path, is a challenge-based system linked to military, cultural, scientific, economic, diplomatic, and expansionist goals.
Furthermore, 'Test of Time' will include a new fractal map, an advisor council, and various other updates, including new free leaders. The 'Test of Time' update will be provided entirely free of charge to existing owners of Civilization VII.
