Rockstar Games' open-world action-adventure title 'GTA6,' scheduled for release later this year, may have the potential to become a 'UGC market' where gamers can create and sell their own content.

PC Gamer recently reported that it learned of this development through an interview with 'HipHopGamer,' a YouTuber who is known to be on friendly terms with Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick. In the interview, HipHopGamer remarked that "gamers could become millionaires," suggesting that GTA VI has the potential to function as a UGC platform.

This implies that GTA VI could evolve into an ecosystem—a 'game-as-a-platform'—similar to Fortnite or Roblox, which have already legitimized paid UGC markets. In fact, countless games created by modders and amateur developers are currently being 'sold' on Fortnite and Roblox, with some creators earning billions of won in revenue.

Rockstar Games' acquisition of 'Cfx.re' in 2023 adds further weight to this theory. 'Cfx.re' is a modding team that has long created modding tools for GTA5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, including the server tools 'FiveM' and 'RedM.' Three years after the acquisition, Rockstar Games launched the 'Cfx.re Marketplace' this past January, an official modding marketplace where users can officially purchase various assets needed for modding.

Meanwhile, Rockstar Games was historically unfriendly toward modders, even ostracizing those behind 'FiveM' on the grounds that it 'encouraged piracy.' However, it is presumed that the company has now reached a stage of formalizing these practices, recognizing that modding and UGC represent a viable market that does not negatively impact the revenue of the base game.
