IShowSpeed banned from all Riot Games for sexist abuse

The travails of former Twitch streamer Darren ‘IShowSpeed’ Watkins have followed the controversial content creator across to his new home on YouTube. Last night a clip was shared across Twitter of the streamer abusing his team mates in VALORANT, leading to his immediate ban from the FPS title, as well as all other Riot Games, after the clip came to the attention of Riot Producer Sara Dadafshar.

The clip in question is not particularly recent, and was shared across Twitter by Jake Lucky, a content creator known for capitalising off drama in the gaming and esports space. IShowSpeed did post an apology and explanation for the clip, which he says came as a result of his having had a very challenging day, which he then immediately acknowledges is not an excuse.

While in isolation that may seem like a logical explanation, the streamer has demonstrated a pattern of worrying behaviour toward women across multiple platforms, as we have detailed below. Even on twitter, one of his most recent tweets says simply ‘girls don’t wanna see you win’, with previous tweets making reference to ‘beating it’ every time he sees an attractive person on twitter.

Not the first time

The ban is not the first of IShowSpeed’s career, with the streamer already having lost access to his Twitch account for threatening sexual violence during an appearance on a dating show. That incident in itself was also not his first time dabbling with these sort of threats, having made the same nature of comment on previous streamed appearances, as well as alluding to committing sexual offences in his song lyrics.

It is also not the first game company to ban IShowSpeed, with the creator recently begging Fortnite makers Epic Games for access to his account, claiming that he ‘didn’t do anything’ and ‘loves you platform (sic)’. Epic themselves did not reply to his request, but it is apparent at least that the incident that cost IShowSpeed his VALORANT and other Riot Game access was not an isolated one.

In IShowSpeed’s apology, he does admit he was wrong, and claim that he has changed and grown since an incident that occurred months ago. YouTube are yet to take any action against the creator for this incident, but he has previously had accounts banned from YouTube. IShowSpeed's most recent stream was titled 'you guys might not see me no more', suggesting he is concerned he could also be banned again on that platform.
