Interview with MVP Cmoving-KyoCha about their new role after rebuilding

It's never easy to share responsibilities in a team; inevitably, someone ends up with the short end of a stick and has to take on a bigger responsibility than the others. When that responsibility is a thankless job, it can become a test of character.

We met Wonho "KyoCha" Jeong and Gisoo "Cmoving" Han, the two players from Team MVP of Heroes of the Storm who took on that 'thankless responsibility' for sake of the others. As the teams went through a rebuild, KyoCha took on the job of being a Melee Flex instead of being a Ranged Flex, and Cmoving has to juggle between being a shotcaller and captain while dealing damage as an Assassin.

At the very least, they did not say that they were making a sacrifice for the team. Could it be that they wanted the team to do better at the cost of themselves being less prominent? Perhaps that's why the teams were able to stay in good shape despite going through a dramatic rebuild. Cmoving is often said to be a man who values honor, intergrity and loyalty. Throughout the interview, we could understand how both Cmoving and KyoCha were men of those virtues.

Please introduce yourselves to the readers.

KyoCha: I'm Wonho "KyoCha" Jeong, the Melee Flex for MVP Black.

Cmoving: I'm the team captain for MVP Miracle, Gisoo "Cmoving" Han.

I've heard that you took a two-week break after the first half of HGC Korea ended. How did you spend that time?

Cmoving: I didn't go back home, but instead played Pokemon GO with Taehoon "Sniper" Kwon to relax.

KyoCha: I also stayed in the team house to get some rest.

What are your plans for the future? MVP Black will be participating in the Eastern Clash, right?

KyoCha: We've been doing scrims with L5. We started to do scrims with MVP Miracle as of yesterday, and we will be doing a scrim with China's eStar Gaming later today. We will be in full throttle once the game version that will be used for the tournament is confirmed. The new hero Probius seems to be pretty strong, but I'm not sure what niche it will fill.

Cmoving: As for us, we feel that we could have done better in HGC Korea, so we will start preparing for the remainder of HGC Korea.

Is there a team from another country that you are keeping an eye on for the Eastern Clash?

KyoCha: We are keeping an eye on eStar Gaming. I've heard that even L5 lost several times against them. Although eStar didn't go through a dramatic change in their roster, apparently the current metagame has been good for them. I also heard that they play the Valla/Tassadar composition better than L5.

European teams have dominated the Western Clash. What are your thoughts on them?

KyoCha: The Western Clash really showed the character of European teams. Misfits often played with some unique compositions, and Fnatic's compositions are often built around Pontus "Breez" Sjogren's ETC. I thought they were the favorites expected to win the tournament.

Turns out, other teams were well-prepared to go against Fnatic's strategy. Fnatic might have been the runner-up for the 2016 Fall Global Championship, but watching them fall to Misfits and Team Dignitas made me realize that they are not a dominant team anymore.

Dignitas often used to sloppily try mimicking other teams' style. However, they stopped doing that after they dropped to the Loser's Bracket after losing against Misfits. Seeing as how Dignitas won the tournament, I guess it was a good call.

Cmoving: Fnatic must have thought that they'd win the tournament if they just did what they've been doing in European leagues. It didn't work out for them. On the other hand, Dignitas looked clueless during the early phase of the Western Clash, but they started to change everything starting from the draft.

Misfits might have done very well in their region, but both Dignitas and Fnatic have plenty of experience in international tournaments, so I expected those two to be in the finals.

Junghyuk "Sake" Lee mentioned how he was happy with the new team not long after the rebuild. Are you happy with the rebuild as well?

KyoCha: I didn't expect that we would do this well. In fact, I thought that this season would be a good time for me to take a breather since we've always been trying very hard. However, we have been doing better than we all expected, and the team mood is pretty good too - I think Sake will agree with me on that. I didn't feel much pressure when going up against L5.

Cmoving: I love my teammates. However, we could do better in terms of teamwork. Also, there is a core player for each of the 'Top 3' Korean teams who is in charge of drafting and shotcalling - MVP Black's KyoCha, L5's Dojoon "Noblesse" Chae, and Tempest's Yoonji "Sign" Hoon. Honestly, I don't think I'm good enough to be compared to those three. If I can do a better job with drafting and shotcalling, MVP Miracle will also do better.

KyoCha, you are famous for your proficiency with various heroes and drafting, but it feels like your current role as a Melee Flex is holding you back from your full potential.

KyoCha: I agree. However, HotS is about teamwork rather than individual performances. I think I can be a good Melee Flex in due time, but I still have a lot to improve on compared to other Melee Flexs who have played the role for a long time.

When Jinwoo "reset" Lim joined the team, he always wanted to play as an Assassin, so I decided to be the Melee Flex instead. reset did not like being compared to star players like Jaewon "Rich" Lee especially while filling a role that he didn’t feel that he was best at. So, we’ve been letting him play as an Assassin because that’s what he felt that he was best at.

Cmoving: reset wanted to play as an assassin back when he was in Miracle, but he couldn't because he had to fill in. He was great when he was with Miracle, so I think he will be a great player no matter where he goes. He has a good understanding of the fundamentals.

KyoCha is well known for his finesse with Tracer. When do you think she becomes a good pick?

KyoCha: Tracer is a strong pick nowadays. She goes very well with Malfurion or Tassadar. However, I don't think I can play well with her right now because I haven't been playing with Assassins. My teammates, however, should be able to do well with her.

Cmoving: Although we haven't picked Tracer during HGC Korea, we are prepared to pick her if necessary. During the Gold League, Sniper, reset, and I were prepared to play with Tracer, and Sniper did pick her in a game and won.

MVP Black will be participating in the Eastern Clash. What are your goals for that tournament?

KyoCha: The plan is to maintain the status quo. We might lose against L5, but we will not be defeated by eStar Gaming. We haven't been playing together long enough as a team, so I don't think being too greedy will help us at all.

How will MVP Miracle prepare for the second half of HGC Korea?

Cmoving: Practicing as a team is one thing, but Sungmin "Darvish" Min and Daehyung "HongCoNo" Lee have been a bit too nervous in matches. HongCoNo took a long break from playing HotS, and Darvish feels pressured because he is the only one who hasn’t won a tournament. As long as those two can play as well as they have been in scrims, we will definitely do better in the remainder of HGC Korea.

Thank you for your time. Do you have anything else that you want to share?

KyoCha: It's true that it feels like L5 is on top of their game. However, do remember that that's where MVP Black used to be. If anyone from L5 is listening, you'd better try harder because we will catch up soon. (Laughs)

Cmoving: I just want to let my teammates know that they are already good enough, and I hope that they can play with peace of mind.
