G2 Esports has punched its ticket to the 2020 League of Legends European Championship Summer Playoffs. The reigning champion of Europe qualified for the post-season with a win over SK Gaming in the final week of the LEC Summer Split.
G2 and SK Gaming headed into week 8 of the Summer Split tied for 3rd place with 8-7 records, and when the two teams faced off against each other Friday evening with post-season qualification on the line. SK fought valiantly, executing dives well on G2 Bot Laner Luka "Perkz" Perković throughout the early game. However, G2 was gaining advantages in the solo lanes all the while, and slowly, the edge of a lead grew into a gargantuan one that allowed G2 to end the game before 35 minutes.
With its ninth win, G2 Esports is the third team in Europe to qualify for the 2020 LEC Summer Playoffs behind MAD Lions and Rogue, both of whom qualified last weekend.
G2 Esports' summer has been uncharacteristically difficult. As early as one week ago, G2 had a negative win percentage after three incredibly dominant splits since the start of 2019. The greatest team in European League of Legends history looked ordinary at best for a majority of the 2020 LEC Summer Split, but after four straight wins over Rogue, Team Vitality, Fnatic, and now SK Gaming, G2 looks to be returning to form in time for the post-season.
With Rogue's loss to Team Vitality, MAD Lions secured a top 2 post-season seed after defeating Misfits. However, no other spots in the standings are locked in, and no teams have been eliminated from potential qualification for the 2020 LEC Summer Playoffs.
G2 Esports plays against Misfits and Excel Esports in its last two games of the LEC Summer Split. If G2 can keep its win streak rolling through this weekend, a top 2 seed in the post-season and a first-round playoff bye are within reach.
