On the penultimate day of the 2020 League of Legends Academy League Championship Series Spring Split, Golden Guardians Academy was eliminated from post-season contention. GG Academy will have to settle for watching the 2020 LCS Academy League Spring Playoffs from the sidelines with Immortals Academy and Counter Logic Gaming Academy.
Golden Guardians Academy was staring elimination in the face in the first game of the day against would-be spoiler in CLG Academy. CLG Academy was the first team to be eliminated from post-season contention after its 12th loss of the Spring Split at the end of week 7, and since then, and the removal of pressure has done wonders for the players. GG Academy managed to storm back and win, but factors entirely external from the team itself barred them from the playoffs anyway.
GG Academy's final game will be against FlyQuest, who also has a 7-10 record. Team Liquid Academy, who is currently sitting in 6th place, possesses a record of 8-9 heading into its final game against Cloud9 Academy after a loss to FLY Academy to start the week. Even if both teams finished 8-10, TL Academy would secure the final seed for the Spring Playoffs due to the 2-0 head to head record it possesses against GG Academy should the seed come down to tiebreakers.
Golden Guardians Academy's second-half struggles were not made easier by a roster swap of Supports with the main Golden Guardians roster after week 6, which brought Choi "Huhi" Jae-hyun to the LCS and sent Yuri "Keith" Jew to the Academy roster in an effort to bolster communication.
Still, GG Academy failing to qualify for the post-season is not the fault of only one member or position. Regardless of circumstance, bottom 3 finish is not an ideal followup for the 2019 LCS Academy League Summer Playoffs finalist. Look for the organization to make changes ahead of the upcoming Summer Split.
