Sony is facing backlash for a new policy requiring users to connect online every 30 days to renew licenses for PS5 and PS4 digital titles.
The issue first surfaced on the 27th when a user on X (formerly Twitter) spotted a message stating that a digital title required a 'license renewal every 30 days.' At the time, many remained skeptical as there had been no official statement from Sony.
However, the policy was confirmed today (the 28th) through the 'PlayStation Online Assistant,' the company's official support channel. Sony announced that the license renewal policy will take effect for games purchased after March 2026. In other words, for any game bought from that date onward, players must go online at least once every 30 days to verify their license.
This news has reignited the 'games as rentals' debate and drawn criticism from users who prefer offline play. Many are questioning the fairness of having to renew a license just to play a game they purchased with their own money if they remain offline for more than 30 days. With negative reactions mounting, all eyes are on whether Sony will proceed with the policy as planned or make adjustments.
