Is Overwatch 2 canceled?

Source: Blizzard

Overwatch 2 has been discussed for years. But that's the thing... It's been years. Is the game actually going to be released? Or will it keep getting delayed until it's forgotten by the gaming community altogether?

Overwatch 2 was first announced in 2019. Blizzard explained that the sequel would become the team's focus, explaining why Overwatch was not going to get any more new heroes or content. This made sense to fans of the game at first... But as more information came out about Overwatch 2, the community was a bit skeptical.

Many players started to feel as though Overwatch 2 wasn't bringing enough to deserve an entirely new ($60) game. It seemed more like DLC for the first game, confusing the Overwatch community. Why couldn't new heroes and new game modes and new maps just be added to the first game?

Blizzard attempted to share more details about the game in 2020, showing off new hero designs, updated weapon effects, and campaign-style gameplay for each hero, complete with skill trees and new abilities. In 2021, Blizzard explained some new hero reworks to keep the game balanced with the new 5v5 team comps. This reduced some of the negative chattering about Overwatch 2, but skepticism remained as the game continued to be delayed.

Overwatch 2 continued to be delayed until it was set to come out in early 2022. But even that is no longer true. Developers explained on November 2 that the team needs more time to prepare the game for launch after continued leadership changes within the company.

"These decisions will push out the financial uplift that we had expected to see next year. But we are confident that this is the right course of action for our people, our players, and the long-term success of our franchise," the update read at the time.

Is Overwatch 2 ever coming out?

Overwatch 2 development has been slowed down thanks to Blizzard's ongoing internal issues. The company was sued for gender discrimination earlier in 2021, leading to employee walkouts and loss of leadership. The company's mishandling of the problem has continued to frustrate the gaming community, causing even more unrest and disruption within the company.

So will Overwatch 2 ever come out?

While the future is unknown, Blizzard still plans to release Overwatch 2 in 2022. The game is not being canceled and the team is hard at work on the project.

But the company itself is struggling. Almost all employees in leadership roles have quit and employees are not happy. Many are refusing to work. The company's stock market value has continued to plummet. The community isn't happy with Blizzard's games, from unwanted World of Warcraft changes to Overwatch's long queue times and lack of balance.

If Blizzard ends up failing as a business, that could mean Overwatch 2 could be canceled. But at the moment, this is a far-off speculation. As long as Blizzard is up and running, Overwatch 2 will continue to be worked on. But fans shouldn't be surprised if the game is delayed or postponed once again.
