Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has issued an official statement regarding the recent controversy surrounding PlayStation's online license verification.
The issue first surfaced last weekend when gamers on X reported that newly purchased digital games on PS4 and PS5 were displaying a 30-day license expiration date. This sparked widespread concern online that players might be required to connect to the internet periodically to maintain access to their games.
Following these reports, some gamers conducted tests and speculated that the 30-day timer might be a temporary measure that automatically converts to a permanent license once the period expires.
"After remaining silent, SIE sent an official statement to the North American outlet GameSpot on the 29th (local time). SIE clarified, "An initial one-time online check is required to verify the license, but no further verification is needed thereafter. Players can continue to access and play their purchased games just as they always have.""
The Japanese outlet Famitsu also received a similar response from SIE on the 30th. In response to Famitsu's inquiry, SIE stated, "The way you access games purchased from the store has not changed, and you can continue to enjoy them as you always have. While an online connection is required once after purchase to authenticate the game license, no further authentication is necessary."
