Kuro Games' open-world action RPG, Wuthering Waves, will launch its 3.3 version update on April 30. Since the game was released globally on May 23, 2024, this is a significant update that also serves to commemorate the upcoming second anniversary.
From its initial reveal four years ago, Wuthering Waves captivated subculture gamers with its distinct graphics and action, and it has continued to live up to those expectations since launch. It has firmly established itself as a must-play title in the open-world subculture genre, and it remains a constant topic of discussion regarding the future of its story, world, and characters.
Given that the game has been deeply committed to engaging with its community through numerous offline events in Korea, we wanted to take a look ahead at what surprises might be in store for this second anniversary.
Across Mountains, Seas, and Snowy Plains to the Cosmos: The Climax of 3.3 Fitting for Wuthering Waves' 2nd Anniversary

The story of Wuthering Waves, which began in Jinzhou, has now moved past Rinascita to the third region, 'Laharoi.' After unraveling the dangers of the Lament and Tacet Discords threatening humanity, and exploring the relationships between the Guardians and Resonators, the game matured as it took players through the 'Black Shores'—an organization dedicated to researching and countering the Lament. From the memorable heroics of Changli at Mt. Firmament to the emotionally resonant introduction of the Shorekeeper, the game has consistently layered sentiment onto its already high-quality action, graphics, and open-world design.
Rinascita further elevated the narrative, building anticipation for the adventures to come. From the carnival city of Laguna to the deep seas and the Seven Hills, the game masterfully realized diverse regions while pairing major character moments with iconic music that remains etched in players' memories. Tracks like 'With Glory I Shall Fall' during the rescue of Cartisia, 'Ode to the Nameless Martyr' during Lupa's duel with the Tacet-corrupted Mia, and 'Chasing Daylight' during the coordinated effort to suppress the Tacet Discord Leviathan—each melody instantly evokes the scene it accompanied, leaving a powerful impression through both sight and sound. Meanwhile, the antagonistic Fractsidus, led by the charismatic Cristoforo, added a layer of intrigue and flavor to the story, leaving players eager to see what kind of chaos they will stir up next.

The new region, 'Laharoi,' reached after passing through the sealed Honami City in Sonora, promises another climax built on meticulous foreshadowing. Originally not a polar region, Laharoi became a frozen pole due to the Tacet Discord 'Aleph-One' and the Threnodians, and its instability frequently triggers 'Void Storms.' Survivors have retreated underground, establishing cities centered around the Spacetrek Collective and the Roya people, and founding the Star-Torch Academy to study and counter these phenomena.
The 3.0 story arc, which began with the Rover traversing Void Storms on a motorcycle, goes beyond mere environmental phenomena to drop clues about the Rover's past and the wider universe. It balances this overwhelming scale with personal connections between characters. After the 3.0 update showcased the Rover's aspirations for space through Monier's short-film-quality PV, 3.1 explored the connection with Aimes—a candidate for the Exostrider—hinting at the existence of a star-sea beyond Solaris. The dangers of Aleph-One and revelations about the Rover's past have set the stage for the upcoming climax.

In the upcoming 3.3 version, the Rover heads to the new region, the 'Plain of Darkness,' to confront Aleph-One and rescue Aimes. Scarred by the lingering power of the Tacet Discord and ravaged by Void Storms, this area houses the 'Strider Gate' created when the Exostrider and Aleph-One descended. It is expected that the Rover will reopen the sealed gate, activate the Exostrider, and embark on a perilous journey to save Aimes.

The Action of 'Hiyuki,' the New Glacio DPS, and the Enigmatic 'Dennia'

With Aimes appearing as a banner character in 3.1, there was much speculation about who would headline the 2nd anniversary. The recent broadcast and 3.2 story confirmed the protagonists: 'Hiyuki' and 'Dennia.'
Hiyuki is a 5-star Glacio Broadblade Resonator and the sole member of the Spacetrek Collective's Special Response Team. Having arrived in Laharoi from the outside for mysterious reasons, she possesses the power to counter Tacet Discords by drawing strength from the future.
Hiyuki, the first 5-star Glacio Resonator to appear in a long time since Carlotta in version 2.0, is a character who overwhelms enemies with various sword-fighting stances. In her normal state, she uses a dual-wielding style with a tachi and a smaller ice blade, but when her special attack gauge, 'Yearning,' is full, holding the normal attack button allows her to switch to archery, dealing wide-area Glacio damage.

Her Resonance Skill, 'Frost Punishment,' launches enemies into the air, followed by an aerial dash for extra Glacio damage. Activating this grants Yearning points and enhances her basic attacks for greater damage.
The core of Hiyuki's gameplay lies in activating her Resonance Liberation, which enters her into the 'Foresight' state, dealing wide-area Glacio damage and enhancing all her skills for a set duration. Her enhanced Resonance Skill, 'Frost Punishment,' pulls nearby enemies in when tapped, dealing Glacio damage and launching them into the air for follow-up attacks. While airborne, she can trigger 'Falling Petals,' a plunging attack that pulls enemies in and deals wide-area Glacio damage.
While in the Foresight state, holding the Resonance Skill or tapping dodge during specific attacks triggers a 'Iaido' stance. Tapping basic attack here allows her to parry enemy attacks and counter with Glacio damage.

Upon entering the Foresight state, her Yearning gauge is replaced by a special gauge called 'Frost Power - Iaido.' Each time she performs an Iaido strike, she consumes this gauge to gain 'Frost Erosion - Frost Tree' stacks. These points are then used to summon ice trees near enemies, dealing wide-area Glacio damage. Activating her Resonance Liberation again causes her to sheath her blade, ending the Foresight state and dealing massive Glacio damage to surrounding enemies based on the accumulated points. By utilizing these stance-swapping mechanics, the key to playing Hiyuki will likely be keeping enemies under constant pressure with her extreme swordsmanship.
The next banner character, 'Dennia,' is a 5-star Fusion Rectifier Resonator. Having appeared multiple times in the Laharoi story, Dennia has piqued curiosity with her dual nature—a cute appearance masking a prickly personality and mysterious ties to the Fractsidus.

Her combat style reflects this duality. She normally attacks by summoning bubbles with her staff, but upon using her Resonance Liberation, she transforms into a 'Disillusioned' form, utilizing demonic hands to aggressively assault enemies.
While information is still scarce, Denia is a character who naturally draws attention. Her Resonance Skill involves gathering and bursting bubbles of starlight, and her enhanced Resonance Liberation—triggered after building special energy—deploys a unique field, suggesting connections to the 'Star Sea' or 'Void Space.' Given the meaningful background and cinematic flair shown during her Resonance Liberation, it will be exciting to see what role she plays as a key card in version 3.3.

Wuthering Waves Version 3.x: A Passion for Bikes and Technical Optimization

As it's the 2nd anniversary, improvements to open-world exploration are just as important as the story and characters. While the 2.0 era's Rinascita focused on 'gliding,' the 3.0 era has replaced it with bikes. Though the initial 3.0 launch was a bit rough, subsequent patches and control adjustments have turned the bike into a fun, unique way to explore Laharoi.
Version 3.3 introduces a 'Mid-Air' mode after completing a side quest. By utilizing mid-air energy, players can glide for longer distances, addressing a long-standing minor frustration. A new 'Gliding Strategy' module will also increase driving efficiency. With modules like the 'Energy Recovery Module' (which speeds up charge jump cooldowns) and the 'High-Efficiency Thruster' (which reduces energy consumption for mid-air dashes), players can combine charge jumps, gliding, and dashing for creative traversal.

Bike wraps are also getting a 2nd-anniversary boost with a variety of new designs. Two major collaboration waves are planned: 'Otherworld Link 1' will feature wraps from Kaiju No. 8, Angry Birds, and Resident Evil, while 'Otherworld Link 2' will include Pragmata, Riders Republic, and Haikyu!! wraps. Additionally, there will be a Hiyuki wrap, Monier's special edition costume 'Cozy Dream,' and a new theme decoration for the SNS Wave-Line, 'Golden Seal of Sweet Coffee,' inspired by Chisha and Namiphon's cafe.
New exploration mechanics in 3.3 include the 'Light Caster' shadow puzzle, the 'Void Matter Puzzle' (based on Tetris-style block games), and 'Light Imprinting,' which uses solar spirit energy to purify Void Matter. Two dangerous missions—'Perfect Flight,' where you explore ancient ruins with the solar spirit and Sigrica, and 'Shattered Heart of the Plain of Darkness,' where you deal with Void Matter contamination alongside Monier—will further flesh out the lore of the new region.

Beyond new regions and content, the 2nd anniversary brings various quality-of-life improvements. Exploration bikes will see better bunny-hop and lighting effects for easier control, and 'Movie Mode' will offer more diverse camera work. Starting in 3.3, exclusive weapon banners will feature new animation sequences, with plans to retroactively add these to existing characters' weapons over time.
UI improvements are also on the way. Version 3.3 will refine the Resonator list and party screen, adding character resonance mode displays and switching functions. Visual consistency across pages will also be improved. For a smoother experience, mobile devices will receive a proprietary frame interpolation technology, while PC users will get DLAA in addition to DLSS for sharper visuals, allowing players with compatible hardware to enjoy the game at native resolution. Field interaction graphics will also be enhanced for better feedback.
To address concerns about increasing file sizes, the mobile client will feature improved resource selection and cleanup tools. Previously, only past story resources could be cleared, but from 3.3 onwards, players can selectively clear map field resources. The minimum download size to start the game has been reduced to approximately 28GB on Android, making it a great time for mobile users to jump back in.

In-Game 2nd Anniversary Events Packed with Rewards

As it's the 2nd anniversary, events and rewards are a major focus. Version 3.3 will feature the 'Plain of Darkness Tracking' event, a commemorative photo collection event, and various other activities to welcome players.
The 'Mysterious Realm Challenge - Fleeting Dream' returns for a limited time. Set in Honami City, this version features Namiphon and offers a wider variety of usable Resonators, abilities, and Echo settings. A difficulty adjustment mode has also been added. Another combat event, 'Challenge! Combat Degree Exam,' offers rewards like Astrite, and the 'Hologram Strategy - Synchronization' will add Sigillum for players to challenge.

The 'Rice Ball'—a staple since the 1st anniversary—returns with new mechanics for the championship, alongside the pinball-themed 'Star Bouncing.' Weekly limited missions in 'Mumu Express: Mission Accomplished!' offer various rewards, and a login event—including 10 Radiant Tides on the day of the anniversary—awaits players.
Furthermore, the 'Moonlit Imprint' first-time top-up bonus will be reset, and the 'Sea Tide's Gratitude' point exchange event will begin. Completing tuning and activity missions grants 'Bubbles in Flowing Melodies,' which can be exchanged for limited pulls (Radiant Tides) and exclusive accessories like Hiyuki's 'Unobstructed' and Dennia's 'Dennia's Doll.' Some past limited rewards will also be available, offering a second chance for those who missed out.

Nine Offline Events: A Look Back at Wuthering Waves' Dedication to Korea and the 2nd Anniversary

Another essential aspect of Wuthering Waves is its offline events. The game has been incredibly active in hosting events in Korea to meet its players since launch. From 'Wuthering Waves in Hongdae' held just 27 days after release, to 'Wuthering Waves Market in Sinchon,' 'Wuthering Waves Park in Yongsan,' the 'Wuthering Waves World in AGF' (where they were a main sponsor), 'Wuthering Waves Carnival in Yongsan,' and the 1st Anniversary 'Wuthering Waves Festival,' the team has visited Korea for every major update.
After the 1st anniversary, the interval between domestic events lengthened slightly due to events like the Kuro Fest celebrating Kuro Games' 11th anniversary. However, they are back in gear, having hosted the 'Wuthering Waves Cafe' themed around Chisha and the 'Wuthering Waves Campus Week' themed around Star-Torch Academy this past January. For the 2nd anniversary, they are hosting the 'Wuthering Waves Festival: Shining Moments, With You' at KINTEX. Being selected as a host city alongside China (Kuro Games' headquarters) and Japan (the heart of subculture) proves Kuro Games' genuine commitment to the Korean market.

This festival is particularly special as it will feature fan-made merchandise sales, something fans have long requested. Because Wuthering Waves has received so much love and attention in Korea, many memes that have spread globally actually originated here. From 'Bread-faced Jinshi' to 'Gmoeng' and the 'Camel-mask' shouted out by the developers, the event will celebrate both official content and the diverse charm of fan creations.

Collaborations and merchandise are also key. Razer will release gaming gear themed around Dennia soon. Beyond previous food and beverage collaborations with Mom's Touch, Dal.komm Coffee, GS25, Banolim Pizza, and Compose Coffee, a collaboration with Musinsa begins on May 19. Fans can also see a physical S.H.Figuarts action figure of the Aimes Mecha-Stout form. Additionally, mini-pouches themed after various Resonators will be released in collaboration with Funism, and a Wuthering Waves PS5 Collector's Edition is also in the works.
The long-awaited concert has also been announced as a 'World Tour.' Spanning Shanghai, Taipei, Tokyo, LA, Seoul, and Singapore, the tour will feature new arrangements of the music that has moved players over the last two years. While details are pending, the repertoire built up over the past two years is highly anticipated.

Wuthering Waves has gone all out to provide diverse experiences both in and out of the game. Of course, the journey hasn't been perfect. Localization issues mentioned early on led to a town hall meeting, and the team has continued to iterate based on feedback. While we've praised the music, there were also criticisms early on that the tracks weren't memorable enough.
By consistently addressing these weaknesses and reinvesting, Wuthering Waves blossomed in 'Rinascita' and is now poised for another leap with Laharoi and the 2nd anniversary. This summary barely scratches the surface, and we haven't even touched on the upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners collaboration. Wuthering Waves' 2nd anniversary and its future are definitely worth watching. If you haven't felt their sincerity yet, this 2nd anniversary might be the perfect opportunity to dive in.
