Fans of Hearthstone's auto chess game mode, Battlegrounds, were treated to a surprise on Tuesday afternoon as a new hero as well as mechanic were announced.

Blizzard Entertainment partnered with one of the game mode's most popular content creators, Radu "RDU" Dima, to reveal the upcoming Battlegrounds Buddies mechanic.

In RDU's video, he revealed that every single hero in Battlegrounds is going to get a minion or buddy specific to them that players can unlock via various in-game quests. Once a player completes one of a variety of quests (RDU mentions "Winning X-fights, removing X-Divine Shields, etc.), a buddy will get added to the player's hand which they can then use strategically to improve their chances of winning.

For example, Bru'kan of the Elements is coming in an upcoming patch and brings alongside his buddy, Spirit Raptor, which interacts with the hero's hero power to turn the tide of combat when killed.

According to Hearthstone's Community Manager, six different content creators are scheduled to reveal upcoming Battlegrounds' information on Tuesday and six more on Wednesday.

With dozens of selectable heroes that have unique personalities and lore in the pool to choose from, creating the buddy mechanic looks to expand on the game's universe even further.
