[WEGL HS] Invitational Winner Sooni: “I hope everyone enjoyed the Hearthstone Tournament”

On the 17th of November in Busan (BEXCO), the WEGL 2017 Hearthstone Super fight was held. The stage held over 512 people. Beating all expectations, Sooni had qualified to the finals. Soonie defeated the Russian professional player Pavel 3:2. Winning 18200 US Dollars, Sooni was interviewed short after his match. We got a statement from the champion himself.

Below are Sooni’s responses from the interview.

¤ Firstly, how do you feel right now winning the tournament?

I am extremely happy. I’m especially happy because I don’t believe there are a lot of events where Koreans are invited to face against hand picked international players. Winning a tournament like this makes me incredibly happy.

¤ Was the play against Suldabe as priest intended?

Of course, I had calculated everything prior. Since the spectators can see both hands, it may seem like a very bad play. However in that situation, it was the best I could do. I think I played while concerning the big picture and lost.

¤ Have you seen Pavel’s clips before?

I have never seen him play. (Did you not look on purpose?) No. Because the games ended so late yesterday, there was almost no time to properly adjust my decks in time for deck submission. This is why I never have seen him play.

¤ In this tournament, you have showed a very interesting and strategic deck.

During the quarter finals, I was only able to prepare my decks against Hoej. Because today was going to commence both semifinals and finals, I think hard on what decks I wanted to bring. Going by the decks that I am comfortable playing with, I assumed people would snipe Suldabe’s quest mage. I went with my secret mage.

¤ During the finals in the last game, you got Mana Wyrm for your turn 1 draw.

After my mulligan, I got Mana Wyrm and Primordial Glyph. After grabbing another Mana Wyrm on turn 1, I knew I could win this game very easily. Although I also assumed Pavel’s mulligans were also really good, there is no other stronger start than Mana Wyrm into coin Mana Wyrm. I think this is why I won.

¤ In your games, your Druid and Priest have extremely high win rates.

I have always had confidence playing Priest. Druid on the other hand is not a class I am fairly good at. The only upside for Druid is that Druid is capable of using a variety style of decks. For today’s tournament, I prepared Ramp Druid, Highlander Priest, and Jade Druid. I am glad my strategy worked well.

¤ Until now, you have shown some questionable Rogue performances. However, your Rogue performance today was perfect.

My Rogue wins have only been 100 wins. It is not a class I have much experience in. Because Keleseth Rogue is so incredibly strong, I had to hope on the Rogue train due to so many suggestions to play it. Due to a couple of mistakes prior, I used to think Rogue was just not a class for me. Through constant practice, my win rate started to increase and I started to play Rogue more. Now I have found a steady amount of confidence on Rogue.

¤ Throughout the national tournaments, you have been showing great results. What is your move after this?

I have no intention of becoming a full on Hearthstone player. I’m going to play Hearthstone as a hobby from now on. To be honest, I was planning to quit Hearthstone after my win at AllStars. Because I qualified to the tournament I was preparing for at the time, I just decided to keep playing Hearthstone. I’m really not too sure what I’m going to do after (laughs).

¤ Is there any last words you want to say?

Preparing for the WEGL Hearthstone tournament, team 4321 helped me out a lot. They helped me a lot In deck building, picks/bans, and feedback after the game. Team 4321 helped me incredibly in succeeding and I just want to thank them. Because Hearthstone tournaments are open for anything to join, I could freely participate without any pressure and have fun along the way with others.
