Sony Interactive Entertainment's (SIE) PlayStation 5 (PS5) exclusive 'Ghost of Yōtei' is estimated to have achieved cumulative sales of 5.4 million copies and game sales revenue of $407 million (approx. 543.2 billion won) roughly one year after release. Although unit sales were lower than those of its predecessor, a higher base price and a limited discount strategy allowed revenue to maintain a level comparable to the previous game.

On the 16th, Rhys Elliott, head of market analysis at market research firm Alinea Analytics, compared the performance of 'Ghost of Yōtei' with its predecessor 'Ghost of Tsushima' over the same post-launch timeframe based on the firm's estimated data. These figures are estimates from an external research firm, not official announcements from Sony or developer Sucker Punch Productions.
According to the analysis, 'Ghost of Yōtei', released in October 2025, has an estimated cumulative sales volume of approximately 5.4 million copies—about 1.5 million copies fewer than 'Ghost of Tsushima', which was estimated to have sold around 7 million copies in the same timeframe. Units sold this year were estimated at approximately 1.8 million copies (generating $121 million in revenue, or roughly 161.5 billion won), with physical copies accounting for 36.8% of total sales.
Despite the difference in unit sales, the cumulative revenue gap between the two titles was only about 3%. Over the same post-launch period, 'Ghost of Tsushima' generated an estimated $418 million (approx. 557.9 billion won) in revenue, showing little difference from the $407 million of 'Ghost of Yōtei'.
The key factors offsetting the deficit in unit sales were the higher base price and discount frequency. Released in 2020, 'Ghost of Tsushima' debuted at a full price of $60 (approx. 80,000 won) and went on discount for $45 (approx. 60,000 won) less than three months after release. In contrast, 'Ghost of Yōtei' was priced at $70 (approx. 93,000 won) and has seen only two discounts on the PlayStation Store since launch, keeping its average selling price per copy high.
Differences in platform install bases and market environments at the time of launch were also cited. While the previous game benefited from launching on PS4—which had a widely established install base near the end of its lifecycle—alongside a demand surge during the COVID-19 pandemic, 'Ghost of Yōtei' launched exclusively on PS5, which has a relatively smaller install base. Elliott noted that the revenue trajectories of the two titles are close, emphasizing that "claims calling this game a failure are completely wrong."
