Kakao Games' new MMORPG World of Dokkaebi topped the domestic Google Play revenue chart on October 13. The milestone comes just five days after its official launch on October 8.
According to data provided by Kakao Games, World of Dokkaebi reached No. 1 on the Apple App Store popularity chart on October 7, when pre-downloads began, and ranked No. 1 on Google Play's popularity chart on its launch day. Over the subsequent holiday period, it held the No. 2 spot in revenue across both major app stores before rising to No. 1 in revenue on Google Play.
Kakao Games highlighted key features of the game, including separating cosmetic items from character growth, acquiring currency through gameplay, and running live operations based on player feedback. Outfits and mounts carry no growth-related stats, ensuring that cosmetic collection does not directly affect combat power.
Service policies and update plans were announced through broadcasts held before and after launch. Following an online showcase on September 8, a live demonstration on September 18 featured Supercat Producer Park Seong-jun, Director Jang Su-min, and Kakao Games Head of Business Cha Myeong-soo. They demonstrated gameplay while answering pre-submitted and live Q&A questions. Incorporating player feedback gathered during the broadcast, the team decided to extend the membership duration from 28 days to 30 days.
In a broadcast on October 9 following the launch, the team revealed improvement plans, including increasing the drop rates for key growth materials 'Dan' and 'Yohonseok' from hunting and adding routes to acquire Taoist magic (Dosul) through clan content. On the same day, temporary maintenance was conducted to adjust the combat difficulty of early field monsters and quest bosses, as well as to increase the 'Geumjeon' currency rewards from field bosses and clan content.
During a broadcast on October 13, the developers explained Taoist magic balancing, quality-of-life improvements, and future update plans. Based on feedback received through the official community and one-on-one inquiries, they announced plans for the October 21 maintenance to reset progress on Taoist magic enhancements and breakthroughs, retroactively refunding spent resources. They also notified players that the Taoist magic breakthrough function would be temporarily restricted during this process to prevent any disadvantage to users.
The in-game economy centers on 'Geumjeon', the core currency earned through gameplay. Obtained from field bosses, raids, and clan content, 'Geumjeon' is used to acquire Taoist magic, growth materials, outfits, mounts, dyes, and other items. Players can also exchange it for 'Yeopjeon' to secure resources necessary for progression.
'Geumjeon' is also used for item trading between players. Certain cosmetic items and memberships purchased with paid currency can be listed on the exchange market, allowing players who do not spend real money to acquire these items using 'Geumjeon' earned through gameplay.
As a growth quality-of-life feature, the game offers 'Myorong', an in-house developed AI chatbot. 'Myorong' analyzes players' gameplay records and growth data to provide guidance on progression directions and priorities, while also delivering information required for clan activities and management. It is designed to assist players in checking growth and content-related details directly within the game.
Equipment enhancement is designed so that failure neither destroys the gear nor lowers its enhancement level. It allows players to attempt enhancements without risking the loss of their equipment.
Kakao Games has begun preparations for global service alongside stabilizing domestic operations and pursuing seasonal updates. The publisher plans to expand its reach in overseas markets based on elements such as its worldview rooted in traditional Korean folklore, pixel graphics, and Taoist magic combinations.
