As one of the most anticipated titles in gaming history, 'GTA 6' is matching its towering expectations with an equally extraordinary development process. Through an interview published on October 5 by the British fashion and culture publication LOVE Magazine, Rockstar Games was revealed to be operating a separate writing team dedicated solely to pedestrian dialogue for the open world of 'Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA6)'. The interview featured Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North; Rupert Humphries, senior vice president of narrative; and James Horton, writing director for the open world, among others.
Senior Vice President Rupert Humphries revealed that Rockstar Games has a dedicated team of writers focused exclusively on pedestrian dialogue based at its Los Angeles studio. Apart from this, there are also writers handling advertising and comedy content spread across New York, Los Angeles, and London.
What they create is the ambient content players naturally encounter during gameplay, including conversations and phone calls overheard from citizens on the street, radio ads, and political programs. James Horton, writing director for the open world, explained that the focus is on making dialogue sound natural even if a player sprints past and only catches snatches of it, while ensuring it holds up as a complete conversation if they stop to listen to the end.
NPC dialogue itself is not a new feature introduced in 'GTA 6'. 'GTA 4' already featured over 740 unique voice actors and more than 80,000 lines of dialogue. Among these, protagonist Niko Bellic accounted for over 7,000 lines, with radio, TV, and motion-capture cutscene dialogue excluded from those figures. At the time, Rockstar noted that it moved away from the pattern in earlier titles where pedestrians talked to themselves without much context, shifting instead toward revealing NPCs' personalities and daily lives through phone calls and other ambient interactions. This approach continued in 'GTA 5', where citizens chatted with each other and reacted dynamically to the player's actions and surrounding situations.

As a result, what stands out about 'GTA 6' is not merely that NPCs talk, but that Rockstar is deploying a dedicated writing team and production staff specifically to create that dialogue. Having already implemented a massive volume of dialogue in previous entries, Rockstar has effectively expanded even brief street conversations into an independent area of production.
This approach is also utilized to convey the atmosphere of the state of Leonida. According to the developers, the game features a wide variety of content, such as campaign signs, robocalls, radio ads, and political talk shows, expressing the local culture and societal landscape. To create this, Rockstar even dispatched research teams to the real-life state of Florida to gather local material. The development team added that they personally visited Miami and the Florida Keys to conduct photography and research, meeting with various locals to capture the region's distinct atmosphere and stories.
'GTA 6' is scheduled to be released on November 19. Set against the backdrop of modern-day Vice City and the state of Leonida, the game tells the story of Jason and Lucia.
