Korea Boardgames is introducing the Korean version of the 2025 crowdfunding edition of 'The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation,' a two-player strategy board game. The number of special cards has doubled compared to the previous edition, marking the game's long-awaited return in Korean since the 2005 version.
'The Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation' was designed by board game author Reiner Knizia and first released in 2002. Two players take control of the Fellowship and 'Sauron,' respectively, moving their characters and engaging in combat with their opponent.
On their turn, a player moves one character forward one space on the board. If an opponent's character is on the target space, combat begins immediately. Before combat, the identity of the opponent's character remains unknown, and each character has distinct special abilities and matchups. An attacking 'Orc' can immediately defeat the first Fellowship character defending, but if the opponent is 'Gimli,' the Orc is immediately defeated instead.
Once combat begins, both players can play combat cards to increase their combat strength or apply various effects, such as retreating a character. This creates psychological mind games as players anticipate their opponent's cards while bluffing to hide character identities.
The Fellowship side wins by bringing 'Frodo' to the first space of the opponent's territory. The 'Sauron' side wins by defeating 'Frodo' or by moving three of their characters to the first space of the opponent's territory. As a result, the outcome of individual battles does not necessarily dictate the winner of the overall game.
After its initial overseas release in 2002, the game received updated designs in 2005 and 2025. The latest edition features larger character stands and overall component sizes, along with new artwork for the game map depicting Middle-earth. The volume of special cards has also doubled compared to the previous version.
