Square Enix Holdings has officially denied a Japanese monthly magazine report suggesting that the company could leave the stock market and go private. The company stated that it has never considered such a plan internally. On September 1, as relevant speculation spread across the market, the company's share price rose 6.97% compared to the previous trading day.
On September 1, Square Enix Holdings issued a timely disclosure titled "Regarding Certain Media Reports." This comes in response to the September 2026 issue of the monthly magazine Sentaku reporting on the possibility of the company going private. The company stated that the report was not announced by Square Enix and that it has not considered privatization internally.
In its September issue, Sentaku published an article titled "Privatization Speculation Surrounds Square Enix, Foreign Funds Stirred." Here, "privatization" simply refers to a public company—where anyone can buy and sell shares on the stock market—leaving the market to become a private entity. If that happens, general investors would no longer be able to buy or sell Square Enix shares on the exchange.
Typically, a specific investor or company management buys up shares through a tender offer, resolves the remaining shareholders' stakes, and delists the company. However, what was disclosed this time is not such a transaction or a delisting decision, but rather an article raising the possibility and a corporate statement denying it.
According to Reuters, Square Enix Holdings' share price jumped about 7% on September 1 following the report. The closing price on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market was 3,161 yen, up 206 yen (6.97%) from the previous trading day.
Singapore-based investment fund 3D Investment Partners reported in an amendment report filed on March 3 that it held an 18.53% stake in Square Enix Holdings as of February 24. This figure is 1.03 percentage points higher than its previous filing. However, the company's disclosure contains no mention of 3D Investment acquiring the company or pursuing privatization.
Square Enix Holdings is the holding company of the Square Enix Group, which owns major game IPs such as "Final Fantasy" and "Dragon Quest."
