Rockstar Games has revealed why it chose two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). The decision came from the belief that adding more characters would decrease the time players spend with each character, thereby weakening the bond with them.
In an interview with IGN published on August 27, Rob Nelson, co-studio head at Rockstar North, said the team discussed various possibilities regarding the protagonist setup following GTA 5.
GTA 5 was the first in the series to introduce a system that allowed players to switch between three protagonists: Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. For the sequel, Rockstar Games even considered taking it a step further by including four playable protagonists.
However, as the cast grew, it became difficult to allocate sufficient time to each character's story. "We were concerned that the time players spend with each character—and the connection they build as a result—would be diluted," Nelson explained. Consequently, rather than expanding the cast further, Rockstar decided to focus on two characters who share a dynamic relationship.
The relationship between Jason and Lucia connects not only to the narrative setting but also to the gameplay systems. Players can switch between controlling both characters and explore Leonida together or enjoy activities such as pool, mini-golf, and kayaking. Committing crimes together, like robbing stores or banks, also positively affects their relationship.
Spending time together in the open world develops the relationship between the two characters and deepens the bond players feel with their story. However, even if players do not actively participate in the relationship mechanics, the narrative mostly progresses with the two bound as partners in crime. Whether to engage deeply with their emotional connection remains up to the player.
While GTA 5 intersected the stories of three characters living different lives, GTA 6 places its weight on the process of understanding Jason and Lucia individually and the relationship formed when they are together.
GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
