Gambit Esports, previously known as Gambit Gaming, dominated in the world of Esports through their relentless tactical discipline, legendary in-game adaptability and an unmatched work ethic that was cultivated in the highly competitive CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States).
Gambit Esports left a mark on the world of Eports that will never be forgotten. There is no shortage of names in the world of Eports that briefly achieved greatness before fading into relative obscurity, but none have managed to quite reach the level of mythical prowess as Gambit.
This Eastern European titan established a legacy that was defined by mechanical brilliance, structural discipline and tactical revolutions. The history of gambit spans across multiple games, most notably League of Legends, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Valorant, and speaks to a team that didn't just win trophies, but fundamentally changed how these games were played.
The League of Legends Era
Back in 2012, the team was working under the name Moscow Five (M5) before their official rebranding to Gambit Gaming in 2013. The iconic five-man roster at the time included the likes of:
- Darien
- Diamondprox
- Alex Ich
- Genja
- Edward
This team very quickly became the greatest threat to the South Korean and Asian regional dominance. During an era when the strategic norm favored passive laning and predictable scaling, Gambit pioneered a chaotic, hyper-aggressive playstyle that was often referred to as "See hero, kill hero".
This aggression was supported by a profound theoretical understanding of the game with Danil "Diamondprox" Reshetnikov, who completely revolutionized the jungle role. Before him, junglers were seen as a purely supporting character whose only job was to shield their laners. He invented the concept of counter-jungling, which is when you actively invade enemy territory to steal their resources and neutralize the opposing player.
When you combine this with Alex Ich’s flex picks in the mid-lane and Genja’s mathematically eccentric item builds, it's easy to understand how Gambit captured multiple Intel Extreme Masters (IEM) World Championships and dominated the early European LCS. They essentially proved to the world that Western teams could both out-think and out-fight anyone.
The Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Miracles
When Gambit decided to broaden their horizons into Counter-Strike, they brought their signature cerebral approach to tactical play along with them, and it really didn't disappoint. This organization enjoyed two full seasons of absolute dominance in the Valve-backed shooter, using completely different philosophies for each of them.
The Kraków Major Triumph of 2017
In 2017, Gambit put together a veteran roster that included:
- Dauren "AdreN" Kystaubayev from Kazakhstan
- Abay "HObbit" Khasenov from Kazakhstan
- Ukrainian In-Game Leader (IGL) Danylo "Zeus" Teslenko
Still, going into the PGL Kraków Major, there were very few analysts who expected Gambit to lift the trophy in light of the powerful teams they were up against. So what followed completely shocked the esports gaming world.
Zeus implemented a rigid, slow-paced execution style that weaponized utility usage map control to absolute perfection. Gambit starved their opponents of information, which forced mistakes that they would then capitalize on with clinical efficiency.
Through winning the Major, they became the first team from the CIS to claim CS: GO's highest honor, bringing an end to Europe's supremacy.
The Academy Revolution of 2021
Years later, after the veteran roster was disbanded, Gambit moved its focus away from signing stars toward nurturing grassroots talent. This led to the organization forming "Gambit Youngsters", an academy squad that featured:
- Dmitry "sh1ro" Sokolov
- Sergey "Ax1Le" Rykhtorov
- Vladislav "Nafany" Gorshkov
When the pandemic forced the gaming world into an online-only model of play, this young squad matured into an unstoppable force, outpacing the entire global scene through their relentless work ethic and meticulous strategic preparation.
The Gambit Youngsters didn't rely on individual star power. Instead, they won through a combination of:
- Flawless trade-frags
- Pixel-perfect flashbang placements
- Unmatched team coordination
They quickly ascended to the #1 spot in the HLTC world rankings, dominating prestigious events like IEM Katowice 2021 and firmly establishing themselves as the undisputed kings of the online era.
The VALORANT Breakthrough
Gambit's final act of global dominance took place in Riot Games' tactical shooter Valorant. When the game launched commercially, Gambit assembled a squad that combined meticulous strategy planning with incredible mechanical ceilings. Led by IGL Igor "Redgar" Vlasov and anchored by the flawless site-anchoring capabilities of Ayaz "nAts" Akhmetshin, the team was years ahead of their competition.
During the 2021 VCT Masters Berlin, Gambit treated the tournament like a game of chess by using Agent abilities in complex, layered combinations that completely denied entry to bombsites. Their victory in Berlin solidified Gambit as an all-time great multi-game esports organization.
A Legacy Cut Short
While they may no longer be actively participating, their legacy will live on forever in the minds of everyone who ever had the privilege of seeing these icons in action.
