A contest is being held to develop ultra-compact games that fit within the 1.44MB capacity of a single floppy disk. In an era where high-performance graphics and massive content are the norm, this initiative turns extreme storage limitations into a creative challenge.
The game culture project group '2P GAME ARCADE' announced that it is accepting entries for the '1.44MB Game Development Contest' until September 4, in partnership with Mini-map, IndieGame.com, Chungkang College of Cultural Industries, and Myongji College. The total prize pool is ₩1.14 million, with ₩720k for first place, ₩280k for second, and ₩140k for third.
The defining feature of this contest is the 1.44MB limit, the iconic storage capacity of a 3.5-inch floppy disk. The organizers explained that this condition was set to test how effectively developers can implement their skills and ideas within such a constrained environment.
Participants must ensure that the entire distribution package required to run the game is 1.44MB or less. Entries must be standalone games that run without a separate server or internet connection, and all files required for execution—including game engines and libraries—must be included within the size limit. HTML or web-based games that rely on web browsers or external runtime installations are ineligible. However, there are no restrictions on the technology used, such as programming languages like C++ or HSP, custom-built tools, or lightweight game engines. Participants do not need to submit their games on actual floppy disks.
The contest is open to both individuals and teams, and participants may use existing game engines or their own custom development tools. All materials included in the submission, such as programs, images, and audio, must be legally owned or licensed by the participant.
With indie game platforms and educational institutions participating as partners, the organizers expect a diverse range of entries from professional indie developers, students, and aspiring creators. Winning entries will be showcased at future 2P GAME ARCADE events and through online channels. A representative from 2P GAME ARCADE, the contest organizer, stated, "This contest is not just about recreating an old storage medium; it is an attempt to see how extreme constraints can transform a developer's creativity and problem-solving approach."
They added, "We hope this serves as an opportunity to rethink the core essence of fun in a game, rather than just reducing graphics and sound to meet the 1.44MB limit. We look forward to the unique challenges from a diverse group of participants, including professional developers, indie creators, and students." Applications and submissions can be made via the official website (2PGARCADE.COM). Inquiries can be sent via email.
