Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's new title, Stranger Than Heaven, is set for release in the winter of 2026.
On the 7th, a special Xbox presentation for Sega's new game, Stranger Than Heaven, was broadcast via YouTube. The stream unveiled details regarding the game's world, story, complex cast of characters, and combat mechanics.
Stranger Than Heaven follows the 50-year journey of protagonist Makoto Daito and his friend Yu Shinjo. Their story unfolds across five distinct time periods and five cities. The debut trailer, released alongside the announcement, offers a condensed look at these features set to the game's original soundtrack.
Masayoshi Yokoyama, head of Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio and director of Stranger Than Heaven, stated, "The development team at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is pouring their heart and soul into this project," adding, "We hope you enjoy this world that is truly 'stranger than heaven.'"
Protagonist Makoto Daito and Key Characters

Makoto Daito is depicted as a deeply complex protagonist. Those around him also harbor various vulnerabilities, yet they are bound together by their dreams. The characters live for these dreams, pursuing them with relentless effort regardless of the obstacles they face.
The story of Stranger Than Heaven begins in 1915. Seeking to escape a brutal and difficult life in the United States, Makoto Daito discovers and boards a mysterious ship in the port of San Francisco. Born to an American father and a Japanese mother, he is a person of mixed heritage—a rarity at the time.
Shortly after his family settles in the U.S., his father passes away. His mother, suffering from discrimination, soon follows. Faced with this, Makoto decides to leave the dangerous U.S. for Japan, where he hopes to find people who look like him.

Penniless, Makoto boards a ship where a fateful encounter with a smuggler named Orpheus changes the course of his life. Orpheus, played by Snoop Dogg, is an international smuggler who lives by a single rule: 'Put what belongs where it belongs.'
Though a cold-blooded smuggler, Orpheus realizes he must save the fates of Makoto and Yu, whom he encounters on the ship. Because Makoto speaks Japanese, he becomes Orpheus' right-hand man. Through this, Makoto learns the rules of the trade, while Orpheus discovers Makoto's extraordinary talent for music.
The story of Stranger Than Heaven follows the meetings and partings of Orpheus and Makoto. Beginning with their encounter in 1915, the narrative spans 50 years of Makoto's fight for survival.
Snoop Dogg described Stranger Than Heaven as "a vast epic of men whose lives are intertwined across time by the whims of fate," adding, "It depicts the stories of men who fought fiercely to carve out their place in a changing Japan."

Another key character is Yu Shinjo. Also of mixed Western and Japanese heritage, Yu grew up in a world where he, like Makoto, felt he did not belong. They meet for the first time on Orpheus' ship, and from that moment, their lives become inextricably linked.
While Makoto is impulsive and confident, Yu is a clever, calculating realist who always looks several steps ahead. After arriving in Kokura, Yu and Makoto attempt to escape Orpheus' ship. While Makoto struggles to adapt to a new language and culture, Yu adjusts quickly, finding work and becoming accustomed to life as a Westerner in Japan.

Unlike Makoto, whose goal is simply to survive in Japan, Yu harbors greater ambitions to change the country. These conflicting ideologies eventually lead them down separate paths, but they reunite years later as partners in the entertainment industry.
By this time, Makoto, having gained experience with the Yakuza, emerges as a formidable figure, entangled with various criminal organizations in Osaka and the Italian Mafia. Naturally, Makoto becomes the muscle, while Yu acts as the brains. In the process, Yu, navigating the dark side of the entertainment world, even finds himself clashing with the Japanese government.
Dean Fujioka, who plays Yu Shinjo, remarked, "Stranger Than Heaven is a story much larger than crime and ambition. It is a tale of identity, belonging, history, friendship, life, and will—a story about shattering one's fate."

Five Time Periods and Five Cities

Stranger Than Heaven is set across five time periods and five cities. The first setting is Kokura, Fukuoka, in 1915, where everything begins.
Kokura, the game's first stage, is the destination of Orpheus' ship and a major industrial hub in western Japan. It was a place teeming with laborers from across the country seeking work, and a center for all forms of entertainment.

The next stage is Kure, Hiroshima, in 1929. As a city centered on shipbuilding and heavy industry, it serves as a social hub for various nations, creating a unique atmosphere. It was a city managed by major Yakuza organizations while Japanese culture modernized rapidly, fueled by the rising popularity of cinema and entertainment. A maze of underground tunnels and hills adds a sense of thrill to the adventure.
Next is Minami, Osaka, in 1943, the premier entertainment district of Japan. Amidst tense international relations, the city reflects a Japan steeped in foreign culture, where Yakuza and the Mafia vie for power. Players can also experience new forms of entertainment.
The stages continue through Atami, Shizuoka, in 1951, and conclude in Kamurocho, Shinjuku, Tokyo, in 1965. A major secret is revealed here, though gameplay details for this section will be disclosed at a later date.

The Entertainment Industry and the Role of a Producer

The entertainment industry plays a significant role in Stranger Than Heaven. The game offers a glimpse into the inner workings of the Japanese entertainment scene during a transformative moment in history.
After Orpheus recognizes Makoto's musical talent, Makoto realizes he has the ability to find music in everyday life. He can also memorize sounds to use as inspiration for his compositions.
Makoto can detect various sounds throughout the town—from street noise and animal sounds to the clamor of combat—and use them to spark new ideas. These sounds change depending on the era, location, and time of day. Sounds acquired in this way can be used to collaborate with various composers and create music.

Initially a performer himself, Makoto later transitions into a producer, managing show production and the performances of other artists. In the game, Makoto, as a producer, determines the structure of each show, manages promotion, and builds stages to earn money.
Another crucial aspect of being a producer is scouting musically talented individuals. Makoto gathers information in town to find new singers and musicians to join his production. As the story progresses, Makoto grows close to various people, and the singers among them exert a significant influence on his life as a producer.

Various characters appear throughout this process. Takashi, for instance, is a member of a Yakuza group in Kure who first encounters Makoto and becomes his assistant; he is the first person for whom Makoto demonstrates his skills as a producer. Takashi has a hobby of playing the piano and singing, which Makoto discovers and provides him with the opportunity to perform.
Suzie is a character Makoto and Yu meet while traveling to the seaside city of Atami in 1951. Atami is one of Japan's most famous tourist destinations, and Suzie is a singer who performs on the city's largest stage. Her life, too, changes significantly after meeting Makoto and Yu.

New Combat System

A new combat system for Stranger Than Heaven was also revealed. Its most prominent feature is the ability to control the protagonist's left and right sides independently. By pressing the RB or RT buttons on the controller, players can use the right hand or right leg, while LB and LT control the left hand and left leg for attacks.
Each input triggers an intense reaction, allowing players to experience a sense of control they have never felt before.
Attacks are not limited to simple taps; holding down inputs allows for powerful strikes at the precise moment. By timing inputs, players can deliver charged blows to approaching enemies or finish off a flurry of jabs with a heavy strike. It is also possible to block an enemy's attack with one hand while quickly countering with the other.
Beyond the ability to focus fire from both sides, pressing LT and RT simultaneously allows players to shove enemies to the ground. Players will feel as though they are using both hands when delivering heavy attacks to downed foes.

Another key feature is the variety of weapons. In addition to punches and kicks, players can utilize various weapons such as knives, hammers, and blades. Knowing when and how to use these lethal tools is critical to survival.
As players progress, they can find more powerful weapons, ranging from old masterpieces of the era to new inventions. It is also possible to craft these lethal weapons or unlock additional functions using newly acquired materials. Acquiring and upgrading weapons is an essential feature for survival in the game.
In addition, players can experience various combat scenarios, such as fighting inside a speeding car, executing powerful techniques to defeat enemies in an instant, and utilizing attacks specific to certain situations.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's new title, Stranger Than Heaven, will be released in the winter of 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox Cloud, and Game Pass.
