NCSoft’s MMORPG Throne and Liberty (TL) has released an update that completely removes role-based effects in battlefield content, alongside various bug fixes and system improvements.
The most notable change in this update is the abolition of the role-based penalty system in battlefields. The development team explained that while they had introduced penalties to severely limit the healing abilities of characters not registered as healers to improve matchmaking balance, it led to two serious side effects: it suppressed the unique playstyles of hybrid weapon combinations, and players specialized in damage and survival began queuing as healers to avoid the penalties, which actually worsened the healing deficit within teams.
In response, the development team decided to redesign the role-effect system, adopting "strengthening rather than suppression" as a core principle. For now, all penalty-based role effects have been removed, and future updates will focus on restructuring the system to enhance the inherent abilities of a player's chosen role. This decision reflects the team's commitment to linking TL's core value—the freedom of weapon combinations—with strategic depth in battlefield combat.
The battlefield map 'Sylaveth's Aerial Garden' has also undergone significant numerical adjustments. The victory score has been lowered from 150,000 to 120,000, while points earned for holding capture points have been substantially increased from 200 to 500. Additionally, points previously awarded for acquiring construction energy have been removed; points are now only granted upon delivering the energy. A new mechanism where water levels dynamically adjust based on the score gap between teams has been added, which is expected to enhance comeback potential. The update also announced the end dates for Pre-Season 2 and Arena Season 5.
Improvements were also made to content accessibility. For the 'World Tree's Guidance' stages 2–5, the 'Contract Token: Abyss' consumption missions, which previously required specific Abyss dungeons for each stage, can now be completed in any Abyss dungeon, and a recommended dungeon guide feature has been added. The waiting time for the 'Dimensional Singularity' event to end has been increased to 5 minutes.
Numerous weapon and equipment bug fixes were also included. An issue where combat status persisted after the effects of the dagger's 'Black Wind Spirit' and the specialized skill 'Thunder Spirit' ended has been fixed. A bug where the activation probabilities for the spear skill 'Battlefield Charge' were swapped between PvP and PvE has been corrected, readjusting them to 30% for PvP and 15% for PvE. For the equipment 'Silver-White Assassin's Spellbook,' an issue where the 'Judgment' effect stacked excessively in certain situations was resolved by setting a cap of 10 applications per second. A bug that allowed players to pass through PCs and NPCs while wearing certain Lunastone artifacts was also fixed.
Additionally, various other improvements were implemented, including a change where skill cooldowns are now applied when switching equipment and stat sets during combat. Other fixes address a bug where World Tree Leaves were intermittently unusable while holding artifacts in the Tower of Greed, an issue where dialogue was duplicated during Codex progression, and a color-retention error in the color picker.
