Team Heretics buy Misfits Gaming LEC spot, Misfits additionally leave LFL

Team Heretics has acquired Misfits Gaming's LEC seat, according to an official press release by the Misfits Gaming Group (MGG). Though MGG remains as a minority partner in the team going forward, the deal will take effect for the 2023 season. The change also calls for MGG to leave the LFL after the end of their 2022 campaign.

Team Heretics is a popular organization created by the Spanish YouTuber Jorge "Goorgo" Orejudo. The organization has competed in League of Legends since 2017 — fielding rosters in minor tournaments, and most recently the LVP.  The team has built a strong following, boasting more than one-million followers on Twitter.

According to MGG, the move is part of their bigger plan to increase its emphasis on nurturing creative talent in addition to fielding competitive rosters. Some of their most notable creators are the Dream SMP collaborators and Minecraft players Tubbo and Ranboo. It's a strategy that has been noted across the industry — many teams putting more focus into streamers and video makers over teams competing in esports leagues.

"Misfits’ mission has always centered on building iconic and inclusive brands that empower our community to embrace whatever makes them unique,” stated Ben Spoont, the company's co-founder and CEO. "Our role as Misfits Gaming Group is to use our creative, strategic and financial resources to help our talent bring their ideas and dreams to life. TubNet is the first of what we expect will be a large number of creator-driven programs and businesses that operate under the Misfits umbrella in the years ahead. It’s bittersweet to know that our mission to diversify means that we cannot be in all places at once and we’re sad to say so long to the loving camaraderie and competitiveness of the LEC, but we did not make this decision lightly and ran an exhaustive process vetting numerous interested offer parties and came to the decision that Team Heretics was the right selection to continue on as responsible stewards of the League."
