USA loses to UK in first major upset of BlizzCon Overwatch World Cup

You read that right -- the United States of America was eliminated from the Overwatch World Cup by none other than the United Kingdom in the first match of the competition at BlizzCon 2018. Needless to say, their first round loss is considered a major upset.

Where Team USA lays claim to six Overwatch League players, Team UK has only one -- Boombox of the Philadelphia Fusion. Their remaining six compete in Overwatch Contenders, with three currently playing for the London Spitfire's Academy team, British Hurricane.

In the build-up to the tournament, Team USA bootcamped in San Diego for a solid week, and many pundits, analysts, and fans predicted not only that they would sweep the UK in quarterfinals, but that they would take home the gold. Instead, it will be the UK moving onto the quarterfinals versus the winner of the upcoming match between Australia and South Korea.

Team USA started off strong with a 2-0 over the UK on Ilios, but from there, things took a sharp turn. USA promptly lost King's Row, their opponent's in-game home turf, in spectacular fashion -- they failed to take even the first objective on the hybrid map, leading the UK to a tidy 1-0 map score.

Volskaya Industries, the third map, was decidedly more contentious, ending with a clutch 4-3 win from the United Kingdom, and although USA seemed to be rallying, they fell short on Route: 66, losing 3-2.
