The 2023 LCK Summer Split started on Jun. 7 with the clash between KT Rolster and Hanwha Life Esports. The two teams fought ferociously over three games, and KT Rolster came up on top. As the team started off with an important win, coach Choi “supreme” Seung-min and jungler Moon “Cuzz” Woo-chan joined the media after the match for an interview.

How do you feel about today’s win?

supreme: I was worried about facing HLE, who is a strong team, but I’m glad that it went well so that we can start off on the right foot.

Cuzz: Although we beat HLE twice in the spring, they were a team with potential, so I was a bit worried. But since our team synergy was getting better, we were confident going in the game, and I believe that was why we were able to win.

How did you prepare for today’s game?

supreme: Since we were scheduled to play on opening day, we hadn’t scrimmed against them, so we didn’t know each other’s picks. We just focused on what we practiced.

Cuzz: It was the first match of the season, so we didn’t have much information. We watched the LPL a lot for data and picked champions that we were confident in.

It seems that you’ve prepared champions that suit the 13.10 patch meta well. What do you think about the meta champions like Milio?

supreme: The bot lane has become more important because of Yuumi and Milio, but there are a lot more OP champions besides them. What’s important is how confident the players are in playing them.

Can you explain a bit about the Volibear pick?

Cuzz: Volibear was always a strong champion when you want to snowball from early in the game. I thought it would be good to play in the current meta.

What has changed compared to MSI?

supreme: Well, first of all, teams weren’t able to pick Milio. Besides that, the champions that were good at MSI are still good. There are more OP champions on top of that, so it’s important to calculate what we should pick and what the opponent would pick.

The opponent didn’t pick Milio even though they picked first. Did you predict that?

supreme: When they didn’t pick Milio, we knew they’ll pick Blitzcrank. I believe the draft was fine, but there were some mistakes during skirmishes.

Do you think KT has gotten close to the correct answer of the current meta?

supreme: I’m not 100% sure yet, but we’ve been picking champions that we think we can win with. If we watch the other teams play more, we can arrange our tier list more and interpret the meta more properly.

Your next match is against Gen.G. How do you think it’ll go?

supreme: We’re the first team that Gen.G plays against, so it’ll be hard to predict what they’ll pick. Still, we have a good start, and we’ll prepare well to have a different season from before.

Cuzz: Although we lost to Gen.G in the playoffs, we beat them twice in the spring regular season. We’re good enough to beat them. I have no doubts about our performance, so we’ll be able to prepare well to win.
