Criteria for choosing a gaming laptop vary from person to person. Some prioritize performance above all else, while others value weight and battery life for daily portability. When you start factoring in screen size, display quality, storage, and keyboard feel, you eventually have to compromise at some point.
However, human desire is insatiable. You want top-tier performance, a great screen, and a satisfying keyboard. You want ample storage, and you don't want to dial back graphics settings in the latest games. As you add requirements one by one, you soon find yourself looking for something that is 'great at everything.'
The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is a product designed to answer that very ambition starting right with its name. It packs an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus processor, a GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU with 16GB VRAM, a 240Hz OLED display, and an enhanced cooling system. As a result, its price tag exceeds approximately 6.5 million won. It is certainly not an easy purchase, but for those unwilling to compromise on performance, display, or user experience, it offers a setup that is hard to ignore.

Flagship Size and Build Even the Size is 'MAX' for Maximum Performance
The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is a 16-inch laptop, but it is by no means small or light. It measures 356.5 × 269 mm, with a thickness ranging from approximately 26.1 mm at the front to 28.7 mm at the rear, and weighs about 2.97 kg. Considering that the previously reviewed OMEN 16 was around 2.4 kg, this unit feels closer in weight class to a 17-inch gaming laptop.
In return, the extra space has been aggressively utilized for high-performance components and cooling. The keyboard is a full-sized layout that includes a numeric keypad, while I/O ports for connecting external devices are arranged along the left, right, and rear sides.
The port selection is equally flagship-worthy. It includes two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports supporting 40Gbps transfer speeds and two 10Gbps USB-A ports, alongside HDMI 2.1, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, and a headphone/microphone combo jack. Power delivery and external display connection via USB-C are also supported. While the previous OMEN 16 left something to be desired due to the lack of high-speed USB-C ports, this model shows virtually no compromise in expandability.
Commensurate with its size, the power adapter is also substantial. The included power brick delivers a maximum output of 460W. Carrying it in a bag along with the laptop every day would be quite burdensome, but given the CPU and GPU configuration detailed below, it clearly highlights the product's underlying direction.

Combination of RTX 5080 and Core Ultra 9 Baseline Raw Power Befitting a Flagship Gaming Laptop
The CPU in the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 (16-ah1054TX) is the Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. Featuring a 24-core, 24-thread configuration combining 8 Performance-cores and 16 Efficient-cores, it operates at boost clock speeds of up to 5.5GHz. It is also equipped with an Intel AI Boost NPU delivering 13 TOPS of performance.
The graphics processing is handled by the GeForce RTX 5080 Laptop GPU. Equipped with 16GB of GDDR7 memory, its VRAM capacity is double the 8GB found in the RTX 5070-based OMEN model examined earlier. Given the laptop's target profile of driving high-resolution textures and aggressive ray tracing at 2560 × 1600 resolution, this is a welcome upgrade.
The system memory consists of 32GB of DDR5 configured with two 16GB modules, while primary storage is provided by a 1TB NVMe SSD. Windows 11 Pro comes pre-installed as the operating system.

The Difference Shown by 240Hz OLED 0.2ms Display and HyperAction Keyboard
The display configuration also lives up to the 'MAX' moniker. The 16-inch OLED panel features a 16:10 aspect ratio, supporting 2560 × 1600 resolution, up to a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 0.2ms response time. Color gamut coverage reaches 100% DCI-P3, with peak brightness reaching up to 500 nits in SDR and up to 1,100 nits for HDR content.
While the previously examined OMEN 16 also offered a 2560 × 1600 resolution and a 240Hz refresh rate, it utilized an IPS panel. Looking solely at resolution and refresh rate, it appears identical to the earlier OMEN 16, but viewing the display in person tells a completely different story. Thanks to OLED's deep blacks and high contrast ratios, the visual difference is particularly striking in games featuring dark scenes.
The keyboard incorporates HyperAction technology. Supporting a 1,000Hz polling rate that checks key inputs 1,000 times per second, it features a full-sized layout complete with a numeric keypad and per-key RGB lighting. While it does not boast ultra-high figures like the 8,000Hz keyboard on the recently released Valorant Edition, it provides a highly practical configuration suited for everything from general gaming to typing documents.

Cooling: As Crucial as Performance OMEN Tempest Cooling Pro and OMEN Gaming Hub
Because a Core Ultra 9 and an RTX 5080 are crammed into a 16-inch chassis, cooling is another highlight worth paying attention to. The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 incorporates 'OMEN Tempest Cooling Pro' for this purpose. HP explains that internal space was expanded compared to previous models to facilitate airflow, utilizing a combination of a vapor chamber and heat pipes to exhaust heat from the CPU and GPU.
For thermal interface material, it uses 'OMEN Cryo Compound', a liquid metal blend enhanced with silicone to increase viscosity. It also features 'Fan Cleaner' technology, which reverses fan rotation to purge internal dust. Fan Cleaner can be run directly or scheduled via OMEN Gaming Hub.

Another interesting feature is the 'Fan Cleaner'. On the Intel-based HyperX OMEN MAX 16, this self-cleaning function reverses fan rotation after gaming sessions to blow out accumulated internal dust. It does not operate during gameplay, and users can trigger it manually or set an automated schedule in OMEN Gaming Hub.
The familiar OMEN Gaming Hub software found on previous OMEN devices is present as well. It provides real-time monitoring of CPU and GPU status while centralizing key settings like performance modes, fan profiles, and RGB lighting. Users seeking peak performance can toggle Unleashed Mode, which HP states allows the Intel-based OMEN MAX 16 lineup to draw up to 300W of Total Platform Power (TPP).
OMEN AI is supported as well. This feature analyzes running games and system status to adjust settings automatically, aiming to boost frame rates while eliminating the hassle of manually tweaking individual graphics options.

How Far Can the RTX 5080 Go? Testing Latest Games Hands-On in a 2.5K Environment
Benchmark scores alone do not tell the full gaming performance story. For this evaluation, actual gameplay was conducted at the native 2560 × 1600 resolution to measure frame rates and long-term performance stability. Tests were run in 'Unleashed' mode via OMEN Gaming Hub.

Overall, the sheer power of the RTX 5080 was fully on display even at 2560 × 1600 resolution. 'The Witcher 3' with ray tracing and frame generation enabled maintained around 90–110 FPS, while 'Ace Combat 8', known for its heavy optimization load, averaged in the 90 FPS range. 'Crimson Desert' also held around 100 FPS with ray tracing active, and 'Cyberpunk 2077' posted an average of 82 FPS in the Ray Tracing Ultra preset benchmark. It is clear that players can enjoy modern titles at 2.5K resolution without making major compromises on graphical settings.
Truly Worthy of the Name MAX: HyperX OMEN MAX 16
The HyperX OMEN MAX 16 takes a very different path from gaming laptops that seek middle-ground compromises. Starting with a Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus and an RTX 5080 16GB, it aggressively packs in every component needed to maximize performance—a 240Hz OLED display, an upgraded cooling system, and a 460W power adapter. On the flip side, fan noise becomes considerable when pushing peak performance. If you can tolerate the noise, it delivers performance capable of driving demanding new titles with virtually no compromise on settings.
Of course, the tradeoffs are equally clear. Weighing nearly 3kg for the main chassis alone and requiring a massive power adapter, it is far from the portability typically expected of a 16-inch notebook. The price, sitting around 6.5 million won, is also not easily accessible. Ultimately, the HyperX OMEN MAX 16 is tailored for users who prioritize absolute peak gaming performance in a transportable form factor over lightweight design or cost performance.
