The Gwangju Information & Culture Industry Promotion Agency (GICON) announced that registration for the Gwangju Pokémon Champions League will be open from October 12 to November 1. Featuring a total prize pool of 3 million won, the tournament will be held offline at the Gwangju Esports Arena on November 7.
The event consists of two individual categories: 'Single Battle' and 'Double Battle'. The first-place winner in each category will receive 1 million won, while the second-place finisher will take home 500,000 won.
There are no separate eligibility restrictions for the tournament. Instead of a single-elimination tournament where players leave after a single loss, a 6-round cumulative points system will be used. Participants can compete against multiple opponents until the end without being eliminated along the way. According to Loud Corporation, the operator of the Gwangju Esports Arena, bonus points will be awarded for using less frequently used Pokémon.
GICON planned the tournament to discover new titles and broaden the foundation of esports. The format was designed to allow Pokémon trainers from across the country to participate.
The finals will be broadcast live on Gwangju Esports Arena's official YouTube, SOOP, and CHZZK channels. Tournament rules and detailed schedules can be found on the GGGL platform and the Gwangju Esports Arena's official Discord channel.
An official from GICON said, "We tried a new title so that various esports fans can enjoy it beyond specific games, while also relaxing the tournament format so trainers across the country can participate with ease." They added, "We hope this will serve as a festival where more participants can compete and interact together through esports."
