The Steam store page for 'Tactical Commanders R', which announced its revival through developer ChogaSoft earlier this May, went live today on the 7th, drawing significant attention from gamers.
'Tactical Commanders' is an RTS game developed by Nexon. Unlike typical RTS games of its era, it combined an online leveling system with realm-versus-realm national warfare, making a massive splash among domestic Korean gamers who primarily played online titles back then.
In particular, its interplanetary warfare based on territorial control was conducted through base capture battles that gave rise to a wide variety of strategies. Different players (Commanders) devised tactics together—with some taking on the role of the anvil, others flanking to strike as the hammer, and others exploiting enemy lapses to capture bases—offering a distinct form of fun compared to standard individual-focused RTS games.
Despite arming itself with such unique systems and gameplay, 'Tactical Commanders' shut down on December 31, 2005—about six years after its official launch on January 1, 2001—leaving many gamers deeply disappointed. As a result, even in recent years, whenever Nexon revived a classic IP or shared related news, fans voiced their desire for the return of 'Tactical Commanders'.
Hope for 'Tactical Commanders' was reignited on December 18 last year when Nexon unveiled 'NEXON Replay', an open-licensing project allowing anyone to develop games using its IP assets. It became known then that 'Tactical Commanders' was included in the public IP lineup.
Then in May this year, roughly five months after the project's reveal, ChogaSoft announced it was developing a remastered version titled 'Tactical Commanders R', turning long-held fan wishes into reality.
As a remastered title, 'Tactical Commanders R' inherits the fundamental systems of the original game. Its Steam store page highlights key features including large-scale real-time strategy battles, command over diverse units and forces, strategic positioning and battlefield control, and team-based cooperative gameplay. It also features gameplay that preserves the original 'Tactical Commanders' feel alongside modernized graphics, updated presentation, and intense sci-fi battlegrounds.
Of course, simply restoring the original systems is not the sole goal. ChogaSoft stated, "Rather than stopping at a simple restoration, we plan to introduce new elements within a scope that doesn't compromise the original's core fun," indicating plans to add fresh appeal while maintaining the nostalgic feel and laying groundwork for long-term service.
The official release date for 'Tactical Commanders R' remains unannounced. However, having previously revealed via its official Discord that a small-scale closed beta test (CBT) is planned for September to October, and now opening its Steam store page, detailed news regarding the CBT is expected soon.
