The popular novel 'The Apothecary Diaries' is being adapted into a live-action drama. Actress Mana Ashida will star as the protagonist, Maomao.
Prime Video announced on the 3rd that the Prime Original drama 'The Apothecary Diaries', co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Toho, will stream exclusively in over 240 countries and regions worldwide starting in 2028. Along with the announcement, a teaser visual featuring Mana Ashida as Maomao was also revealed.
Based on Natsu Hyuuga's novel of the same name, 'The Apothecary Diaries' is set in the inner court of a fictional empire. It follows Maomao, an apothecary who uses her pharmaceutical knowledge and keen powers of observation to solve mysteries and conspiracies within the imperial court. The series has surpassed 57 million cumulative copies in circulation worldwide, including translated editions, and the TV anime adaptation that began airing in 2023 has also enjoyed immense popularity.
The drama will be directed by Yuki Saito, with Erika Yoshida writing the screenplay. Filming took place over roughly six months on a large-scale set recreating the inner court.
Actress Mana Ashida, who plays Maomao, stated, "I was originally a huge fan of the novel, so I felt a sense of nervousness about participating in a work I love so much," adding, "I hope to share this excitement with both fans of the original work and those experiencing it for the first time." Original author Natsu Hyuuga shared, "When I actually met Mana Ashida, I thought, 'That's Maomao!'" and noted, "The sets and costumes I saw at the filming location were remarkably gorgeous, and I could feel the production team's dedication in every detail—from the script, props, hair, and makeup to etiquette and posture."
The Prime Original drama 'The Apothecary Diaries' is scheduled to stream exclusively worldwide on Prime Video in 2028.
